2014 was bound to be a difficult year for Democrats.
History suggested nothing less. The incumbent presidents party almost invariably loses congressional seats in midterm elections, and the six-year itch was always going to be difficult for Democrats to overcome. Moreover, the Senate map was especially unforgiving; 21 Democratic-held seats, including seven in states won by Mitt Romney, were up, against just 15 GOP seats, only one of which (Maine) was in a state President Obama carried in 2012. Given that the GOP only needed to net six seats to capture control of the chamber, the partys ultimate triumph hardly counts as an upset.
So a Republican Senate takeover was always more likely than not; history and simple arithmetic could lead you to no other conclusion. Claims that bolder presidential proclamations or a more sympathetic news media could have turned the tide, therefore, merit a healthy dose of skepticism.
Nonetheless, it bears noting that the mainstream political press corps all but abdicated its responsibilities this year. Unlike 2010 and 2012 when media coverage exposed the lunacy of Christine ODonnell, Ken Buck, Sharron Angle, Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin reporters gave free passes to equally fringe candidates this year, taking care not to draw too much attention to the hard-right views espoused by some of the GOPs star recruits.

(34,661 posts)3. This seemed to be the game plan after the
2010 cycle. If one recalls the Chamber of Commerce Heritage Foundation and every right wing think tank was pissed at the press for exposing their TeaBillies favorites. You just knew the so called press would do steno jobs. Big time fail here in Nevada as far as telling the public who these TeaBillies were all about, but, what do you expect with the Wynn Adlerson and Katz money flying around. The local media sure as hell not going to write anything negative about the big threes financed idiots.
