17. The body cams might make a difference.

One of the stories the local news had on the other night here was a story concerning how one city near Boise that has had a lot of violence and shootings these past few years is now requiring all of their police officers to wear cameras on their bodies.
The idea is to capture more evidence to help prosecute criminals by capturing video of them committing the crime.

However, the unintended consequence of doing this also made the police officers act in a more legalistic manner because they realize their actions were being taped on video and could be used against them.

Obama met the Congress with a $75million plan over three years to help purchase the recording devices, following the countrywide turmoil over the killing of black teen Michael Brown in a police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri in August.

According to reports, the federal government would provide a 50 percent match to agencies that buy the cameras. There are more than 900,000 sworn officers in the US.[/b

21. Well, President Obama is a genius, we all know that already. So, this latest proposal of his rocks.

And I am sure that President Obama had already heard about some of the reports that had come out concerning body cams used by police departments cutting down the number of complaints received by those police departments who started using body cameras with their officers.
The body cam is just an extension of the "dash cam" that many police departments have mounted on the dashboards of their police cars.
The cameras used by the police department in the city here in Idaho reportedly caused about a 50% drop in complaints about police brutality and/or misconduct.

The underlying cause for that is because the police officers had to act within the law more often than they did before their actions were being caught on video.
So, it is a win-win situation.
And since the President is a 3rd-level chess playing champion, I'm sure he saw the benefit of using body cams right away.
