They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, DU, whether they be mens or childrens, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, DU, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no DUs. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but thats no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the babys rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, DU, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, DU, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

You are right, Santa Claus or some version of the idea will continue as long as there are a people who want to believe there is good in the world.
Because there is.

(4,743 posts)And while I don't ever lose sight of them, I think that a lot of people here get target-fixated and can't, or worse yet won't, appreciate the season, which has managed to get thankfully agnostic without losing the essential point.
I can be outraged about a lot of shit, but still see, think and be good...it seems as though that's a dying art. There are monsters in this world, but that doesn't mean it has to be a world without Santa

(62,325 posts)energy on things that are a problem, rather than on something that for the most part, brings a lot of happiness to a whole lot of people.
But I don't think it's a majority of people, there will always be those who have a need to turn anything they perceive as bringing happiness to others, into something controversial. Don't know the reason for that, but that too is part of human nature. Hopefully only a small part.

(7,473 posts)Why destroy the illusions of kids too young to understand what is going on in this strange world in which we live.
When my kids were young, we stretched the Santa illusion as long as we could, my daughter is doing the same with her kids.
What harm is it to foster fun, anticipation and excitement for those young people who, in due time, will face the reality of out times.
Phooey on those who doubt Santa, they have no heart!
It rained yesterday so there were no footprints on the roof but the cookies were gone and the hot chocolate was gone too. Bravo Santa and thanks!

(4,743 posts)I think, honestly, some people want to be mean - to ruin children's dreams as a means to make them cynical and questioning. Not that being a questioning cynic is bad, but having your ideals of Santa thrown in your face is, well, fucking cruel.

(62,325 posts)Just one small gift from Santa, a teddy bear, can light up a child's life. Even if it comes from a thrift shop. It isn't about the cost of the gifts or how many they receive, it is about the fact that someone is thinking about them with love and someone thinks they are worth remembering for one day of the year.
