Mall Security Guards Who Killed Unarmed Black Man Won't Be Charged

Posted: 09/19/2014

A prosecutor announced Thursday that no criminal charges will be brought in the case of an unarmed black man killed while being restrained by mall security guards.

McKenzie Cochran, 25, died at the Northland Mall in the Detroit suburb of Southfield in January. A day after he had been asked to leave the building over suspicious behavior, Cochran returned and reportedly told a worker at a mall jewelry store that he wanted to kill someone. The worker called security, and when Cochran wouldn't leave, guards pepper-sprayed and restrained him. He struggled on the ground as three officers held him for several minutes, one with a knee in his back.

Cell phone video shows Cochran crying out and saying, "I can't breathe," as shown in footage above from local outlet WJBK. He also asked for bystanders to call 911 and said he was dying.

"Stop resisting," a guard repeated several times during the incident, captured in a longer cell phone video from a bystander:

The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Cochran's death an accident in March, naming the cause of death as position compression asphyxia.

needs to be outlawed. It's no 'accident' when you put someone in a position in which they can't breather, then keep them there until they die.

The PTB have taken their model for war in the ME and applied it to American citizens...why I have no idea. What did we do all the sudden to warrant death by cop?

someone? What is wrong with this nation, why doesn't the killing stop? It goes on and on, domestic violence kills the "loved ones", kids having guns goes into schools and kills, people in shopping malls are killed, people in theatres are getting killed, cops kills civilians, civilians kills cops, what are we as a nation becoming. The killings needs to stop.

But hey, summary execution is the appropriate response to trespassing.

Struggling to restrain someone threatening murder is going to inherently involve risks.

The security guards chose to asphyxiate Cochran. They did it long enough to kill him.

And no, he was not threatening murder. At least, not in the legal sense. "I'm going to kill someone" is not sufficiently specific to be legally considered a threat.

But hey, it's not like police manage to not kill someone who is, say, driving around shooting out the window of her car while wearing body armor. An unarmed teen at a mall is clearly far more of a threat and must be killed.

Death is the only possible way to keep people under control, and security guards should be granted the right to execute anyone.

IOW, they murdered him by asphyxia. The only other naturally occurring asphyxia is when coming into this world through the birth canal.

This type of asphyxia is when they choke you for a long time on your way out.

That message was received by millions of us, LOUD AND CLEAR. Wear a badge, get away with murder.

America is sick and dying on the vine. "Stop resisting" means "I can kill you without reprisal because I have a badge and a gun."

Just keep grinning you fucking fools, you think its funny when an officer murders a POC. Keep smiling.
