Years after those alleged killings, Kyle had another story to tell. This one referred to the vacuum of authority in New Orleans following Katrina, when the city slipped into chaos. According to the New Yorker and several military publications, Kyle and a few other SEALs drank late in San Diego late one night in early 2012. The SEALs began telling stories, and Kyle offered a shocking one, the New Yorker reported. He and another sniper traveled to New Orleans, set up on top of the Superdome, and proceed to shoot dozens of armed residents who were contributing to the chaos. The magazine said one conversation participant said Kyle claimed to have shot thirty men on his own,
So Chris Kyle summarily executed dozens of Americans in New Orleans? He apparently saw himself as judge, jury and executioner in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Whatever happened to the Constitution? Folks like him claim to be defending it.
This is a man who's being portrayed as a hero by our sick and twisted society.

(3,724 posts)When police were summoned, they ran Kyle's name and were told he had some sort of special clearance from the military, so he was sent home with no charges filed. None of the sheriffs in the three surrounding counties ever heard of this incident. As far as they're concerned, it never happened.
He also claims to have beat up Jesse Ventura in a bar fight. Ventura denied the incident altogether, and in fact sued Kyle for defamation. He continued the suit even after Kyle died, and won his claim against Kyle's estate.
I think Kyle was full of shit and talking out of his ass in all three of these stories.

You should probably look up the definition of "doubt". If I had evidence it wouldn't be a question of doubting or not doubting.

Yes, I know "you are doing a heck of a job Brownie" was supposedly taken place. Still, with so many reporters and the national guards and others - this should be easy enough to verify. Or not.

(16,068 posts)The Danziger Bridge shootings were police shootings that took place on September 4, 2005, at the Danziger Bridge in New Orleans, Louisiana. Six days after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, members of the city's police department killed two people: 17-year-old James Brissette and 40-year-old Ronald Madison. Four other people were wounded. All victims were unarmed. Madison, a mentally disabled man, was shot in the back. New Orleans police fabricated a cover-up story for their crime, falsely reporting that seven police officers responded to a police dispatch reporting an officer down, and that at least four people were firing weapons at the officers upon their arrival.[2]

1. If he did kill all those people outside the Superdome, how come we're just now hearing about this? You would think that a story like this would make headlines around the world.
2. Suppose that he did get through the National Guard, how did he have access to that kind of rifle?
3. Let's not forget that he got sued by Jesse Ventura for $2 million for defamation.
4. The journalist named in this article found zero evidence that proved his claim about getting car jacked at the gas station that he named in the book. Not a single employee of the gas station could not verify that this happened, and there were no witnesses.

As their legend grew they would be picked up for "special assignment". However, their tales would get bigger as their admirers would want more and more. Eventually they would crash and burn getting caught in their lies.

(19,567 posts)I'm not doubting he had some pretty messed up fantasies and told more than a couple of tall tales, but I don't believe this story for one second.
Think about it; if what he says is true wouldn't someone have mentioned people that many people being shot around the Superdome? Wouldn't' there have been bodies and at least is some cases witnesses to these "armed residents" spreading "chaos" suddenly falling down dead from a gunshot themselves? It's a tall tale from a disturbed man, that's all.
You can't have done what he did for a living and be mentally pure. His lies about the death he inflicted when he was not a US sanctioned sniper aren't all that surprising, really. Killing was what he had done, he was very good at it and he began to associate that with his worth as human being, at least that's my guess. It's all pretty sad when you stop and think it.

(1,397 posts)I'm 70 years old; 28 years in the Army including two tours as an infantry soldier in Vietnam. I have all the patches, tabs, wings, badges, and the beret with a full flash -- Special Forces, Ranger, Airborne (I jumped out of perfectly good airplanes), various awards and decorations.
I'm very turned off -- contemptuous even -- by stories like "American Sniper" and the recently-released tale by the guy who claims to have shot Osama Been Forgotten.
Most of us grunts in Vietnam, or any other war for that matter, took lives -- if you add up the grenades we threw, thousands of rounds we fired, Claymores we detonated, artillery and mortar fire we called for, gunships and fast movers we directed, we likely took a lot more lives than one sniper. It's not something I'm proud of nor is any other combat-experienced vet I know. We were young lads, ten feet tall and bulletproof, and The Best And The Brighest told us we had to go kill commies. You won't see us in movies, we don't have book signings. When we get together we talk about our grandchildren and our knee replacement surgery . . . then we lift a glass to our buddies who did not come back alive and who will never have any grandchildren.
As for his New Orleans story, I doubt it.
Just my $.02 worth.
csziggy
(34,137 posts)Every time I read about this guy what comes to mind is that not one of the veterans I've known over the years that actually saw combat ever wants to talk about what they did. To a person, they are very quiet about what they did and dislike discussing it - just like you say.
The braggarts I've met have been proven to be posers that never did what they claimed - and some of them never got close to combat.
So when I read about someone like this self claimed "sniper" I seriously doubt his veracity on any subject, especially when he brags about killing people. From what little I have read of what he claims, and from what I've seen of the movie based on his tales, I think he was a loathsome human being.

(2 posts)the story of the snipers killing people in the aftermath of katrina cannot be attributed to Kyle from any source I've found. the genesis of the story is actually attributable only to a different former sniper, Brandon Webb.
Webb made the claim (2 months after Kyle's death!) that Kyle told him the story while they were both drunk.
believe whatever you want about the man, I cannot verify anywhere that Chris Kyle ever bragged about killing people in N' Orleans.
I have googled around and dug around through a hundred articles, and can only find articles that reference the story, but that only lead back to the same source.
I admit that I haven't read his book, but I've seen several posts that claim Kyle wrote about it somewhere. so if any of you have read it, could you please tell me where in the book it says so?
