They have to be told by their Police Commissioner
"When New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at murdered NYPD officer Rafael Ramos funeral last weekend, police turned their backs on him in protest. As the service for Ramos partner Wenjian Liu approaches on Sunday, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton has sent to letter to officer urging them not to do it again."
A heros funeral is about grieving, not grievance, Bratton wrote in the memo, obtained by the New York Post. After referencing the act of disrespect on the part of many officers who attended last weeks funeral, Bratton wrote, I issue no mandates and I make no threats of discipline. But I remind you that when you don the uniform of this department, you are bound by the tradition, honor, and decency that go with it.

Meanwhile in Nashville and Pittsburgh..
Compelling letter to the NYPD from Commissioner Bratton.. we'll soon see if they disrespect Officer Wenjian Liu like they did Officer Ramos.

(18,186 posts)where those officers only added to the grief of the family- with their childish posturing -
didn't work out so well.
And then at graduation, when the cadets did that shit, they basically were saying "we're the future officers who WON'T RESPECT THE LAW OR THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK'S DULY ELECTED OFFICIALS."
They looked like lawless thugs.
They'll probably do it at the next funeral, too, just to let the people of New York know that they can't tell cops what to do.
But one can have hope that they will someday act like responsible, respectful adults.
Cha
(297,196 posts)And, disrespecting their fallen brethren, Officer Ramos.
Officer Wenjian Liu's funeral is where it's going to be on the line for them. Are they going to heed the Commish's advice with honor and decency or are they going to triple down and really mess themselves up?
The whole world will be watching.

(18,186 posts)One rule for the NYPD; another rule for the rest of us.
Respect is a two-way street. Hopefully, most of the NYPD officers understand that. The assholes in the ranks need a come to to Jeebus meeting if they can't figure it out.
If any pull this childish, thug crap at Liu's funeral, they SHOULD be fired. Law enforcement is not supposed to look out for itself and screw everyone else. They are supposed to work with the public and with elected officials for the good of all, not act like gangbangers themselves with no regard for decency or for the law.
If we don't all start working together, everything will fall apart. That's the way I see it.
Cha
(297,196 posts)to get it. Commissioner Bratton said he would.. "issue no mandates and I make no threats of discipline".. See if they'll do it on their own. Wonder what his plan is if they don't?

(18,186 posts)It saddens me that there seems to be this war - in some places - between law enforcement and the citizens.
Most people don't want to harm officers or see them harmed and most officers don't want to see people harmed by cops or anyone. But the bad apples have the biggest mouths and sticks, unfortunately.
I just keep hoping we can get to a better place for all of us, and concentrate on getting the truly violent and dangerous off the streets so cops and citizens can feel safe.

(50,269 posts)If anyone knows how to start a web site, I bet a whole lot of people would like to apologize on behalf of the mayor. My apology would be: "Dear NYPD. I'm sorry your training has been so inadequate you deal with your problems by throwing temper tantrums."
Cha
(297,196 posts)It's as important to be known as is the fact they turned their backs.
Good for Bratton. I hope they listen. I hope the backlash was enough to keep these officers respectful, regardless of what they think about the Mayor.
I wonder what lynch is going to say about this. I doubt he'll remain silent.

Cha
(297,196 posts)if nothing else. The NYPD wants respect but they can't even give it.. so bogus.
