PETA hasn't exactly been a favorite organization of DUers. Be sure to read both responses.

PETAs Response to Sarah Palins Facebook Post of Son Stepping on Family Dog
For Immediate Release:
January 2, 2015
Its odd that anyonelet alone a motherwould find it appropriate to post such a thing, with no apparent sympathy for the dog in the photo. Then again, PETA, along with everyone else, is used to the hard-hearted, seeming obliviousness of this bizarrely callous woman, who actually thought it appropriate to be filmed while turkeys were being slaughtered right behind her in full view of the camera.

PETAs Response to Sarah Palins Second Facebook Post
For Immediate Release:
January 3, 2015
PETA simply believes that people shouldnt step on dogs, and judging by the reaction that weve seen to Sarah Palins Instagram photo, were far from alone in that belief. Palins Facebook response shows us that she knows PETA about as well as she knows geography. Yes, we campaign against the Iditarod because when the dogs arent being drivensometimes to deathmost live chained or inside cages for their entire lives. And were a vegan organization, so we sit on pleather couches, wear stylish vegan kicks, and consider fish friends, not food. (Also, by the way, we just sent a case of vegan caviar to Vladimir Putinand no, you cant see his house from yours, Ms. Palin.) We have no reason to believe that the Palin companion animals arent ordinarily pampered, and we wish the entire family a peaceful and humane 2015.

PETA Encourages President to Protect Animals, the Environment and Citizens' Health by Promoting Plant-Based Delicacies
For Immediate Release:
December 31, 2014

Moscow Prompted by reports that the decimated Caspian Sea has led Russia to turn to Vietnamese aquaculture farms to satisfy its citizens hunger for caviar, PETA is rushing a case of mouth-watering vegan Cavi-Art to Russian President Vladimir Putin as well as a note pointing out that as a historic exporter of caviar, Russia could bolster its faltering economy and protect depleted sturgeon populations by producing plant-based and therefore sustainable versions of the delicacy.
PETA is encouraging Putin to set Russia on the path to a more secure environment and economy and improved human health in 2015?, says PETA President Ingrid E Newkirk. With so many healthy and delicious vegan delicacies to choose from, its the perfect time to celebrate with fish-friendly food.
Decimated by over-fishing, sturgeon populations in the Caspian Sea the natural home of these sensitive, intelligent fish have dipped dangerously low, prompting some caviar producers in Russia and around the world to switch to industrialised aquaculture farms, which are often filthy, enclosures in which fish are condemned to swimming through their own waste and can suffer from rampant parasites and diseases. Female sturgeon, who feel pain and fear as all animals do, are often cut open while they are still alive so that the eggs can be ripped from their ovaries.
PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that animals are not ours to eat, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way, is also calling on Putin to prohibit the capture of orcas in Russian waters and work with marine-mammal experts to rehabilitate and release the orcas caught and held captive in recent years.

It's fish eggs.

I bet she will blame the dog.

(9,154 posts)Basically, as a mother, she is teaching her child that cruelty to animals is okay. Since humans are also animals (Kingdom:Animalia), she is teaching her child to be cruel to humans.
It's amazing and saddening to watch the cruelty of one generation get passed to the next, and to in turn, mess all the rest of us up through the chaotic node of the flapping of butterfly wings.

(111,261 posts)A photo like that one might be cute to other family members who know both the kid and the incredibly patient doggy, but it will always be interpreted differently by complete strangers.
This could be the first time he problem solved, trying to see over that counter. It could be a milestone and that dog is likely the best member of that family.
Palin still doesn't know any of this stuff. She's a walking, babbling PR disaster, as the McCain people found out just a little too late on the campaign trail.
PETA's response is uncharacteristically mild.

I think there was an issue with dirt scraped from her shoes in those drawers but we were farm kids and grew up on dirt and cow manure.

(80,708 posts)...on some issues they are spot-on, and for all their terrible PR they have some good PR too.
However, sometimes- like everyone particularly overcommited to a particular belief system, ideology, or lens through which to view reality, they or some of their membership sometimes has a tendency to go overboard, and see the universe in black and white instead of shades of grey.
When PETA is more worried about the rats in Manhattan than the people, they have a problem. And not everyone agrees that viruses=chickens=dogs=people, from an ethical standpoint.
That said, on issues like the circus (above) and factory farming, etc. they are often correct and do a useful service in bringing such matters to light.

(80,708 posts)My problem is when they (PETA) go into black and white thinking. And it is in those areas that I think their PR can be counterproductive, even if it gets attention- sort of how greenpeace didnt do themselves any favors by mucking up the nazca lines.
I actually LIKE tofurkey, for one, but it is never going to universally replace actual turkey at thanksgiving. Etc.
Erich Bloodaxe BSN
(14,733 posts)but I've never been as averse as most of DU. I do think PETA has a lot of messaging issues, relying on 'shock' tactics that often turn off those who would otherwise be useful allies in their causes, and leave them open to having their message turned into mockery by the media. I think they do their best work when they're more educational, rather than confrontational.
Jim Beard
(2,535 posts)used against my party. To further explain, I want to cite the current demonstrations about the police and their assault on the disadvantaged. What we need to see more of is the protesters STOPPING the looters like I have heard of on one occasion. I have recollections of the 1960's riots that marred civil rights demonstrations with the burning of Detroit, Waytts and others. The thugs got the press coverage and they multiplied. After that Nixon won the Democratic south for 8 years with Ford serving 4, Carter only 4 with Reagan & Nixon netting the next 12 years. The Democrats only had 4 years of the next 30 years after the riots.
You bet we need to correct what is wrong but lets do it so we will win all the way around.
I feel the same way about the Police Union. I'm Democrat and want to help unions because I feel they help the average worker. Now they are biting the hand that feeds them, the Democratic voter. If they lose the Democratic Union supporters, they only have the republican anti union people left. They need to understand that.
So does the other side.
Be aware that FOX News is waiting around every corner to get the perfect framing on their lead photo to use against us.
Lets not give them any more propaganda material that necessary!

But when any kid does something stupid and dangerous (and standing on even the most patient dog is stupid and dangerous,) you don't laugh or take pictures, you correct the dangerous situation calmly, firmly and absolutely immediately.

(12,081 posts)The guide dog was still getting to know where he fit into our "pack" and thought he could play really rough with our son. The dog thought he out ranked our son. We had to teach the dog he did not out rank our son, but we also taught our autistic son how to behave around the dog so he could be safe. It does take patience, but you are right. When we saw our son doing something dangerous we would immediately correct the situation even if the only thing we could do was separate him from the dog. Palin should have at the very least gently removed her son from the dog and certainly should not have posted a photo.

(2,535 posts)the dog will teach the boy when he it has gone too far. Dogs very definitely treat children differently. I can remember a few times of me or my sibilings playing with our dogs but they let us know when to stop. A growl , snarl or a snap is all it takes to send the message. It does depend on the age of the child too.
Did I say it was OK to step on a dog? But have you ever had someone walk on your back for medical reasons? Why do you think it is OK to step on dogs?
I was commenting on the boy having Down Syndrome and you need to treat them differently from other kids. With Autism, there are some things you have to let slide or you will be constantly scolding the child. Also they have a problem communicating because to them facing us and our talking is confusing because they see us as watching a poorly dubbed movie. They have difficulty understanding emotion.
The Autism spectrum is wide. Some are simply loners but can speak without any problems, my grandson is partially verbal.
You really are an inconsiderate person. Maybe a good nights rest will give good results.
