I'm needing to get a small, totally non-fancy, economical black ink printer that will let me print receipts, copies of bills, coupons, etc., without routinely emptying my savings to buy more ink.
Suggestions?
Thanks!

They aren't the fastest but they are dependable and do a very good job on basics.
Canon MG7520 is the model number on our newest one. Super easy to use.

(4,876 posts)MFC-J4750W is the model. My first non HP printer.
It was cheap about 80 bucks, has everything, fax, printer, copier, scanner, also has wifi built in so you can print from anywhere... I got it because the ink is cheap as hell. A black cartridge is about 15 bucks and $28 for the 3 color carts.. You can also change just one color if needed.
I'm pretty happy with it.

(51,076 posts)I have one that I bought at a garage sale that the library was having and gave them 8 bucks for it and it came with a new cartridge installed and another one still in the foil package and thats been 2 plus years ago and I still haven't had to change toner yet. its an HP laser jet 1022
I've got an inkjet that I haven't used since then that if I wanted to print something in color i could use but so far I've not needed to use it. I bought it new for 29 bucks and it prints out a photo quality picture if you want that.
laser would be the way to go.
Do they even still make dot matrix printers. my first one all those years ago was a nine pin and I never did have to change the cartridge in it. I think I probably still have it out in storage.

(34,136 posts)I've had good success with HP and Brother lasers, a friend swears by her Samsung.
I got my big Brother laser (with duplexing - prints on both sides automatically) from their refurbished store: http://www.brothermall.com/Printers/Refurbished/20
Their lowest priced laser printer right now is only $69.95: http://www.brothermall.com/Printers/Model/HL2230/Refurbished
Shipping is free and in most states there is no sales tax.
One thing with the lasers the cost of the toner cartridge will stun you - but they last a long time. And since toner is not as highly engineered as ink for many inkjet printers, I would not hesitate to buy third party toner cartridges.
One reason I went with Brother - their professional level machines are used by printing companies such as FedEx Office (where my husband worked). In fact, the laser printer my husband is using is one they had at the store and were throwing away. It needs a new drum, which would cost more than replacing the printer but for as little as he prints it will hold up for a long time. It just couldn't do the thousands of pages printed a week that the store needed without a new drum so it was set aside to be tossed.

(10,044 posts)comes with a drum that makes over a thousand copies, and a temporary toner that lasts about 500 copies. Price for a new printer is $120 reg. price, and a full size toner is about $50
My new printer is a Brother HL-2240. I love it. Easy to install.
Best price was from Staples, and they have sales on printers all the time.
Don't get an inkjet. Ink is too expensive and the cartridges don't last long.
Brother's online assistance can't be beat.
My HP Inkjet was about due for a new cartridge (about $39 for plain black) the "used" refilled ones don't work right, and I put it up in the closet even tho it was still usable. I started to hate this printer HP printer and it's hunger for ink...jams happened often too.
This Brother is my second one and it lasted about 10 years. Regretted not buying another one, but didn't know that inkjets were junk.
This is a laser I think you call it...

(20,582 posts)a single problem, and the (non-brother) ink replacement is fairly inexpensive and lasts a looong time. I've done thousands of pages of books and invoices with a single replacement.
