(102,495 posts)I figure that no matter how cold, icy, windy and miserable it can be, at least one can add more layers and protective clothing. When it's hot hot hot hot hot, nothing makes you more comfortable short of A/C at settings that would break the bank.
Last year we had a really miserably cold, windy, snowy period with double digit subzero "real" temps that nearly everyone (myself included) took as an excuse to burrow inside... Well, I've finally taken those 15 pounds I gained as a result off and am now out there doing at least 4-5 miles of walking--regardless of weather-- every day with the dog. One good thing is that, even bundled up, you burn more calories!
Now, haven't I made you feel better?
No?

(11,065 posts)He's a winter breed though. He insisted we still go for our nightly walk. As bundled up as I was I nearly froze to death before we even got passed the yard, and I actually made it to the half way point before I could stand no more. If it wasn't for that ghastly wind it wouldn't have been so bad.
Just checked on him again (I've been doing it about every 15 or 20 minutes), and he finally decided to come in but only for his dinner. I have no doubt in a few minutes he'll be wanting to go back out again. He's been doing that since that little bit of snow fell yesterday... inside for a few minutes and wants to go back out for a couple hours.

(1,712 posts)I'm expecting Saturday to be chaotic. We have a 2nd cold front coming in on top of the one that's already here, and it's expected to bring lots of precip for 2 days. With a high of 33, lots of folks here will be panicking, we'll have tons of accidents, and most of our area will be convinced that we're all going to die in the ice and snow. Days like that, I kind of miss living in the north, where we can complain about the cold but in the end shrug our shoulders, bundle up, and get on with it.

(13,685 posts)Heat up the house first, then boil away at least a cup of water.
The steam will humidify the air and as we all know, humid air holds heat longer than dry air.
Down to 6 tonight in the Southern Appalachians, maybe more. My penquins, if I had any, would be loving it!
dixiegrrrrl
(60,010 posts)because it takes out any dampness in winter temps here. It can get clammy when it rains in winter.
Poor folks up in the No part of Ala. are getting much colder than us more southern residents, but still, 16 low here is remarkable, and not welcome.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)I open up the house at the first sign of dry air and let that clean dry air in. Then do the boil thing. The boiling doesn't work as well when the air is cold and damp, because changing the temperature of damp air takes a lot more energy.
Ever notice how the rainy days in winter down south, the temperature only fluctuates 10 degrees? That's because of the energy factor.
I like the south for its moisture, otherwise I'd live in the desert. And the penguins, if i had any, wouldn't like it.

(34,139 posts)Hard freeze tonight. Usually when it gets this cold, the air is still but tonight the Polar Express is ripping by - I can hear the wind blowing and branches falling outside!
Tomorrow it will get up to 41 F and be clear and sunny. Tomorrow night we will have less wind and it will only get down to 24 F. I don't plan to go outside until at least Friday. I don't function very well under 60 F.

I was not happy when I left work and my car battery was dead. Fortunately, it started right up when jumped, but my fingers got so cold just in the moments it took to find the latch to open the hood that it took about 20 minutes for them to stop hurting once the car warmed up inside.

(60,010 posts)I can tell you that people west of the Rockies do not understand how painful just a few seconds of cold here is.

Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)It is supposed to get down to 13 tonight and up to 29 tomorrow. Not too incredibly cold, if you ask me.
My question is this: Why is it when we get any actual cold weather in winter down here, the National Weather Service puts out a severe alert for the wind chill and for frostbite and other things related to cold weather? Don't most people in the rest of the world deal with this every winter? Do they really need to drum up the scare tactics for a cold night and semi cold day? The temperature is going to go below freezing. It's not the Boogie Man. It's not Coldmageddon. Keep warm. Common sense is all it takes.
This, by the way, will pretty much be the extent of our winter. After this, it will continually warm up and we'll have spring started by the end of January or beginning of February. When everyone else gets Spring, it will be almost summer here by then. We get a very short winter, literally once or twice, it will freeze. Some years we may have a light dusting of snow...ONCE. I mean, it might snow one time in any given year, maybe.
I hate hot weather. I break out in blisters and overheat. We have hot weather here 10 months of the year. Summer is 10 months of almost super high, glue melting heat and humidity.
So, how cold is it here? To me, not cold enough and it won't be cold enough long enough for my tastes. I wish it would snow. I love breathing in that cool, crisp air when it snows...and playing in the snow.
