It's a bleak humor, but considered along with the fact that the Popes instruct their followers not to use condoms and that 1.5 million people a year die of AIDS in Africa alone I'm not sure slapstick guffaws are really possible. Looking for really funny humor about homophobia and anti science teachings that cause death might be asking for too much, no?

European Catholics and Jews live in a diverse and assimilated Western culture with democratic ideals at its core. I'm sure in France they give a giant Gallic shrug.

Individuals may be disgusted at other peoples' individual expressions of the freedom of expression (and those cartoons are disgusting), but you notice the Pope isn't calling for a Crusade to wipe out either the Jews or the Muslims -- because IT'S NOT THE MIDDLE AGES ANY MORE. The Muslims who are terrorists in the 21st century still have their minds stuck in the barbarism of the Middle Ages. Muslims who are not terrorists are just trying to live their lives like the rest of us and send their kids to school.

Except for the representations of Rabbis, along with others, claiming special protection from criticism, there are no anti-Jewish images in themselves.

But, given the portrayal of the other two major religions, it's probably safe to assume
that the inclusion of the Jewish cartoon characters was not intended to be flattering or
praise worthy...

Freedom of Expression is not synonymous with Freedom from Criticism.

Criticism is cool, and had there been nothing but criticism about any Charlie Hebdo cartoons, WAY COOL!

But no, some assholes took so much offense they went and murdered people over it.

Not cool.

It's not supposed to be funny. Good satire is seldom funny, actually. It's just another way to look at the truth.

How people react to satire is a pretty good measure of their reaction to other things.

Nobody got killed for those images. Fundamentalist Muslims often act differently than fundamentalists of most religions, it seems. That's the lesson here, for whatever it's worth.

Hell, I get my share of crap just for identifying as an atheist.

Religions have had millennia to mutate social norms to make criticism of their superstitions into severe obscenities.

They are proud of it. It's part of their culture, and they came to it through much suffering and revolution.

I don't even want to know what they think of our public displays of piety, where every politician is required to invoke God in every speech, and damn near everyone who gets a microphone stuck in their face by the media is required to say, "It was a miracle. We are so blessed," even if every other person in their town was just killed by a tornado.

Satire can be rough stuff, not for the faint of heart. I find those cartoons disgusting, but to quote another Frenchman, "I will defend to the death their right to say it."
