When Democrats Show Spine, Wall Street Loses

Today, January 7th, the GOP-led House tried to ram through a package of 11 bills that would chip away at the 2010 Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

They considered this package of bills as HR 37, and considered it under suspension of the rules, which means the bill needed at least 2/3rd of the House to vote for it in order to pass.

They didn’t get the votes.

Republicans needed 285 votes to pass it. They only got 276:

145 Democrats, and one Republican, Rep. Walter Jones, said NO to starting off 2015 with a Wall Street giveaway.

You can find the complete vote breakdown here. 35 Democrats voted for the bill anyway:

Reps.Ashford, Bera, Beyer, Bishop (GA), Brownley (CA), Bustos, Carney, Connolly, Cuellar, Delaney, DelBene, Esty, Foster, Garamendi, Graham, Himes, Johnson (GA), Kilmer, Kind, Larsen (WA), Lipinski, Loebsack, Sean Patrick Maloney, Murphy (FL), Peters, Peterson, Polis, Quigley, Ruiz, Rush, Schrader, David Scott, Sewell (AL), Sinema, and Sires.

But many Democrats took to the House floor to oppose this giveaway, including Reps Keith Ellison, Stephen Lynch, Al Green, Dan Kildee, Mike Capuano, and Jan Schakowsky:

And Senator Elizabeth Warren sang the praises of those who led the fight against this in the House:

Great work by @NancyPelosi, @MaxineWaters & the House Dems to block the GOP from delaying the Volcker Rule for the biggest Wall St banks!

It’s pretty amazing what Democrats can accomplish, when they live their (ostensible) Main Street values.

really like the money and prestige. The little people, meh, not so much.

I've emailed her a few times regarding different bills and even asking her to tell me her most progressive stance/

I'm still waiting, and waiting , and waiting.
