Tell ya one thing about Christie here in SE Pennsylvania and South Jersey:

This guy has awakened a sleeping giant: many of these NFL fanatics don't give a rat's ass about internecine Presidential Rethug warfare. Many of them, shot and a beer types, vote Republican because, well, because people of color DON'T vote Republican, if you get my meaning. Yes they use excuses as to WHY they don't vote Democratic, but some fair degree of prejudice abounds when the surface is scratched. We all know this, some will actually have the temerity to say it. Generally, they don't really care who is in the battle for the R-Nomination and some vote, most don't, but then head to the polls in the General Election and vote Rethuglican.

Now, they're probably STILL going to vote R in the General, but all Jeb has to do is run a 30 second ad of Christie's high-five being rejected by Jerry Jones and then hugging the man to GUARANTEE that he'll win the PA and NJ primaries should he need them by that time. These people here HATE HATE HATE the Dallas Cowboys more than they hate the Commies and/or the Russkis. They will see to it that Christie loses a primary election if they have to go out themselves and round up like-minded voters. If you're not an NFL fan or come from a region where you don't have a mortal-enemy-team, you cannot imagine what Christie has done to himself here. If he went out and kicked Mother Teresa, he couldn't have more antipathy against him than he does now.

I'm not saying that it is necessarily OK to judge a politician by the team for which he roots, but in this region, and I would suppose in the NY Metropolitan region, he has made enemies for life. It is riotous to listen to the sports talk radio shows and hear both announcers and callers state that they voted for him twice but now think that he's the worst --fill-in-the-blank-- they've ever seen. and that stupid sweater on him…sheesh.

That effing ref gave that game to the Cowboys…and I almost NEVER complain about the officiating, but THAT was a clear FIX.

it is hard to get through to the American voter. look at Christie, he has shat all over NJ, threw his state under the bus to placate Iowa on the pig crates, and still has a career.... but (and it pains me to say this because it shouldn't be this way) if you fuck with NFL fans they actually care about the political process and will want to vote against you. Maybe this will finally do him in!

It was sweet to hear Angelo Cataldi* RIPPING Christie on this point and almost sounding like a political pundit.

(although I'm finding Cataldi pretty much unlistenable as the grossness that is "Wing Bowl" approaches.)

* for non-Philly folks, Cataldi is a rather, erm, "large" personality himself. Well, large in the mouth department anyway. Local sports talker who is clearly republican but usually (well for the few minutes a day that I can generally stand to listen to him, and only that because the news is so depressing) makes at least some attempt to avoid being blatantly political.

100% correct.

Lemme tell you what I REALLY hate about Cataldi besides that shithole wing bowl insanity: Cataldi of course is a graduate of Columbia School of Journalism and pretends to be a moron. Somebody uses a three or four syllable word on his show and it's "What does THAT mean? Big Words…can't Figger 'em out" or words to that effect. He makes a fortune playing an idiot on the radio. I leave for work early so I listen to the Overlap Show and then the first 15 minutes of the asshole. I sometimes like Morganti but he actually IS a moron, so it's easier to take his idiocy.

and he clearly is just a shrewd entertainer, playing the buffoon. Almost like a caricature.

I've only started listening to sports recently because the news was just stressing me out way too much. I haven't learned the other guys' names yet.

Cataldi is originally from Rhode Island and is paid to be a big Philly fan…he knows exactly how to get the Eagles Fans whipped up into a frenzy and uses every means to enhance his ratings and of course his bonus at the end of the year. He makes more I think that anyone else in our radio market and probably more than almost anyone else in our TV market with a couple of clear exceptions. Cataldi knows virtually nothing about the intricacies of sports these days, but he doesn't have to. He's like a screaming Limbaugh and drowns out everyone who tries to work alongside of him.
