Waiting for a deer, turkey or hog to walk out into this field I'm watching. I'm bored, it's cold and windy and my one typing finger I have poking out of the glove is numb, ask me anything. (you can see what a serious hunter I am because I'm surfing the internet and tapping all over my IPhone Mainly come out here to spend time with my dad and brother)

(24,853 posts)Good luck and I hope the first thing you see is a feral pig... preferably a young one under 200 lbs.
madville
(7,410 posts)I like them around 100 pounds and to be fairly clean, I hate fooling with them when they are caked in mud and other "stuff" lol
cherokeeprogressive
(24,853 posts)Agree with the clean part.
Good luck!

(26,001 posts)The various steaks and burgers lasted a couple winters in his family freezer.
I don't eat much meat -- fish when I'm out, poultry sometimes, as a guest -- because I don't want to support turning living beings into industrial "products." The process, in turn, dehumanizes us (as well as wrecks the planet).
But that honestly obtained elk of his was, I will grant, fairly tasty stuff.

(70,205 posts)such as turkey, venison, whatever I can hunt or fish. I figure they have a fighting chance. Not bought meat in about 30 years. beans and rice a lot.

(70,205 posts)even think about animals caged up--just for humans to eat. my sister has laying hens so I get some eggs once in a while.

I was thinking about eventually buying some chickens/hens in order to get my own eggs. However, I saw a clip about egg production. A part of the clip pointed out that only Grade A eggs were sold in stores. The other grades were used for other stuff. So, when people grow their own animals for eggs what do they do about grades? Is there a real difference in taste between grades?
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)but we feed them Scratch and Peck Feed, it's non GMO 100% organic, our chickens like it and reward us with lots of good tasting eggs.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)store bought meat. We now grow or hunt all of our meat and poultry, and we catch our fish at Mormon Lake.

(2,952 posts)I've always felt the "gamey" nature of the meat adds to the flavor of both...any stew for that matter. Good hunting!

(111,255 posts)Hunting in cold, miserable conditions would never appeal to me in any way. Fishing was more my thing and I'd bait my own hook and gut & clean my own fish, thankyouverymuch. If it came down to hunting in winter vs. no meat, I'd plant more beans.
So good luck to you.

(86,586 posts)I didn't read it but suddenly thought about how the power of suggestion effects one's ability to hang in there, so to speak, and just how long it would be before the poster in the tree will have to engage in that thought process now that you've mentioned it.
...know what I mean?

(45,274 posts)I quit a few years ago, but over the last few decades it became all about how to stay comfortable in 10º weather and not so much about shooting a deer. Every year my stand got a little fancier. I ended up in a 6x10 shack on a trailer, complete with propane heater & hotplate. My hunting buddy & I built it one fall.

We have the damn things all over AZ, no regs on hunting them or how many we can harvest.
