http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/pba-lynch-spurs-yelling-cops-city-hall-feud-article-1.2076394"This is what my members want: they want more cars, better vests, more manpower, one cop shouted, according to the sources. They don't want an apology.
Another union member told Lynch: "I don't care about an apology. I want to know what you're going to do to protect us."
Lynch said he disagreed about the importance of an apology, according to the sources.
The meeting then disintegrated into a physical conflict between cops who support Lynch and those who dont, the sources said.
It seems that at least some cops want their union to behave like a union instead of a malignant circle jerk.
Dumping Lynch would be a very smart move on their part.

Besides, it was obviously all self-defense and justified.
Your post sounds almost like an Abbott and Costello routine "Who's on first"?

(19,326 posts)I was thinking some 'good cops' stood up to Mr. Lynch's disgusting
advocacy for cops to murder unarmed citizens at will, whoever, whenever
they want to.
But no, they were whining about wanting more new equipment.
Well, at least they didn't side with demanding an apology crowd, so I
guess that's a start .. a piss poor start, but a start never-the-less.
it was at least good to see that it started with this:
"Tempers flared toward the end of the nearly two-hour session at Antun's in Queens Village when some members began yelling at PBA President Patrick Lynch over his declaration that Mayor de Blasio owes cops an apology."
It may have steered into a whine about equipment, but at least some members initially had the integrity to call Lynch out for the right reason.
99th_Monkey
(19,326 posts)and I join you in being grateful for this, esp. if the 'good cop' demeanor
and outlook grows, and then prevails.
In some ways NYPD is at the top of the cop food-chain at least symbolically,
so it would be a GREAT place to play that out on a national stage.
It would be great if this stays in the spotlight long enough to effect some meaningful change. Hope DeBlasio keeps talking about it, too (assuming he stands his ground).

(948 posts)They were demanding more cars, better vests, more manpower.
Recent events have shown they need NONE of those things.

(19,326 posts)Tell that to 'bvf'. [rofl]
What you said ^ is where I started out, here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=6082571
saying:
"I was thinking some 'good cops' stood up to Mr. Lynch's disgusting
advocacy for cops to murder unarmed citizens at will, whoever, whenever
they want to.
But no, they were whining about wanting more new equipment."
I thought 'bvf' made a legitimate point, that some of these cops refused to demand a di Blazio 'apology' for whatever reason; baby steps.
Maybe it's the weed, but I'm finding the 360 circularity to be majorly amusing: [rofl]

(469 posts)It is ABSOLUTELY appropriate for union members to complain to their reps about the equipment they are provided with to do their jobs. I would also agree that, in the city that is the nation's #1 target for terrorists, the quality of the vests they wear for protection and the cars they drive on the job are quite important.
All of the above are far more relevant to the job of policing than any Mayoral mea culpa.
99th_Monkey
(19,326 posts)in that I don't want to begrudge NYPD of equipment they actually do need,
it just seemed like an odd way to say "I don't think demanding an apology
from the Mayor is a good idea".
I do see the connection (i.e. that it may be wiser for NY cops to honor the
chain of command that they rely on to get needed equipment) but it just
struck me as odd they didn't have a more principled argument than that
in their arsenal. i.e. "protect and serve" , "honor our authorities" etc.
There was no ill will intended towards the cops (esp the good ones) who
are just trying to make a living, and stay alive in the process.
ncjustice80
(948 posts)And I often wonder if they should be issued vests at all, as it lends itself to their aggressive militarization.

(34,589 posts)The worst part is that they staged a slowdown and nothing bad has happened; they advertised the ability to make do with fewer cops and less enforcement.

(23,973 posts)Are police departments supposed to be law enforcement, or are their duties of revenue enhancement for the city more important?
If crime levels weren't affected by the LEO slowdown, then their real duty is to collect taxes not voted upon by the citizens but called "fines" for made-up "crimes".
Maybe NYC can get by with less manpower, equipment, etc. and therefore need less revenue to fee the ever-expanding maw of the police state.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)But the police not doing their job is going to put big time fiscal pressure on deBlasio. And I think we've cleared up the fact that the current and recent past mayors have been using the police force as a de facto revenue stream.
All deBlasio has to do to fix this problem is raise taxes. Then he can try and fire however many cops he wants.
And just because crime hasn't gone up yet, doesn't mean that it can't go up. I find it unlikely that humanity has evolved into a kinder, gentler being in just the last 15 years since Broken Windows came out.

(1,306 posts)I would assume he's buddies with Giuliani.
And like all Republican shills, he resorts to juvenile antics
to score cheap political points at the expense of the public
who deserve better from their elected officials. This is just
a ploy to oust DeBlasio, get momentum for a re-call election,
in true Nixonian dirty-trick fashion. They make me puke.
If a Republican were Mayor, he/she would have never dared
to question the authority and the behavior of those cops
who are acting like jack-booted thugs. Sociopaths with
badges is what they really are.
The citizens who have been harassed and brutalized by the
Giuliani stormtroopers deserve the apology -- not Lynch.

(5,586 posts)Chanting "Rudi's a liar, set him on fire" after Guiliani insisted on incremental pay raises.
That same year, a flyer was circulated in the police community asking that Mayor Guiliani and the police commissioner to "be denied attendance of any memorial service in my honor as their attendance would only bring disgrace to my memory."
10 years ago, Pat Lynch and a hundred officers protested outside mayor bloomberg's vacation home at 1:00 am demanding higher pay.
I don't think these people care to much about political party.

(1,151 posts)They are out of control. They are acting like spoiled children, with alot of fire power. When they routinely pepper spray crowds of people who are celebrating a football game, they are out of control.
I am heartened by the policemen who stood up to their bullying leadership and fellow police men. I cant wait to learn more and Im exited that there are good men attempting to gain control of the situation. Maybe the good guys will finally win. Maybe the police will decide to join the people. Maybe we can get rid of billionaires and flowers grown right on concrete in the winter time on mars.

I grew up with the understanding that police were to be accorded respect for the job they do, and tried to pass that sentiment on to my kid. Almost three decades later, I'm sure I'd handle things differently.

(31,849 posts)First, notice where the lines were drawn ... Manhattan cops supporting Lynch; whereas, Brooklyn and Bronx cops opposing him. Is it too much to guess that the cops most directly in the "line of fire" (Brooklyn and the Bronx) are more concerned with their on the job risk, than some show of strength?
Secondly,
I'm wondering if they are seeking protection from the repercussions of going along with Lynch's slow down scheme?
