Pro-cop rallies and campaigns following Tamir Rice shooting and other controversies no substitute for better police work: Mark Naymik

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cops should quit begging for respect.

To counter demonstrations against recent deaths at the hands of police here and elsewhere, police and their backers have organized their own rallies, including the late December "Sea of Blue" rally at downtown Cleveland's Public Square. The Ohio Fraternal Order of Police just launched a campaign called "Stand with Cops," which includes a petition drive and radio ads reminding us that cops are the good guys.

Here's the problem I have with the rallies and campaigns: They are based on a phony premise that most people are against police officers.

Where's the evidence of this?

Pro-police rallies have drawn far larger crowds than rallies questioning the Cleveland police shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. And the majority of demonstrators I have encountered or read about are not against cops, they are against bad policing.

It's the sign of an inherent expectation of deferential privilege.

You see the exact kind of behavior in MRAs and billionaires when they're upset because sensible people refuse to kiss their asses.
