As a political outsider, Ben Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon, is given only a slight chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination.
But people who want him to run for president have already donated $12 million to the cause. A look at whom those donors also backed suggests that his support isnt relegated to the fringe of the Republican Party, although the donors have given more to Tea Party and insurgent Republican groups than to party committees.
The amount of money raised so far is enough to show that there is interest in a candidacy by Mr. Carson, a frequent Fox News commentator with a biography that any candidate would envy. Raised by a single mother, he graduated from Yale and rose to prominence as a surgeon at Johns Hopkins. His speech to the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast gained him many fans among critics of President Obama.
Presuming that most of the people who donated to his committee would also support a presidential campaign with their money, a campaign by Mr. Carson would be able to raise enough money to contest one or more of the early Republican primaries or caucuses.

(47,953 posts)Carson has no chance at either Prez or VP. None whatsoever. So the 12 million is completely down the drain. He's not even in CONgress, so he can't push some sort of corrupt legislation either.

(128,905 posts)It's all a ruse. He'll "manage" his "Super PAC" after he drops out and can keep all the money in it to do what he wants with it. It's all a scam. They need to torpedo those PACs.

(28,751 posts)I can never tell if Carson has lost his mind or just playing the suckers for money. He says some truly stupid things and his proof is always "But I'm a Doctor so I know." As if arguments based only on authority are convincing.

(1,451 posts)He is not fooling anyone except his donors. the republican party is ridiculously ignorant enough to convince its donors that showing us a black face will make black people vote for him. Nope they got it wrong. But who am I to tell them that they are swimming with sharks that eat their own. They still believe that Black Americans voted for the President just because he was Black. Like we never had a chance to vote for a Black President before. Silly People!!!

(588 posts)Step 2 Once you have followers and you will, run for office or at least make a good show of it
Step 3 Followers who now are loyal followers just give you money.
Step 4 Change your mind and keep money, repeat every 2-4 years if you become broke or just feel like fleecing your followers.

(60,010 posts)As Colbert pointed out so cleverly in his show, PAC funds can legally be used for almost anything, and do not have to be reported expenditures.
Palin was smart enough to know that, with her Sarah Pact pretend bus trip.
So that's the payoff for all these not lightweight contenders.
