"I unambiguously condemn the attack on Charlie Hebdo because I believe in freedom of speech, but I think their cartoons were racist".
These look like they're synonyms, but they're not. In general, in a sentence with "but" in it, only the part after the "but" really matters.
So the first is fine (for what it's worth, I think it's wrong, and the people calling the cartoons racist mostly haven't got them), but the second one is not.

I do hope your next project is to do something about the continued misuse of "your" and "you're."

(34,069 posts)I unambiguously condemn the attack on Charlie Hebdo because I believe in freedom of speech, but I believe emulating its action is not a helpful response because being offensive merely for the sake of offending makes it less likely, rather than more likely, that the diverse peoples of the world can peacefully share our very small planet.
