Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio announced Thursday that Ernst will deliver the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday. The announcement comes a little more than a week after Ernst was sworn into the Republican-controlled Senate, and more than two months after she was elected to succeed Democrat Tom Harkin. In a conference call with reporters earlier this week, Ernst said she believes lawmakers in Washington can work together in a cooperative spirit.
