Sundays performance will be the 77-year-old comics first show in Northern California since dozens of allegations of sexual assaults began cropping up like poisonous mushrooms, forcing the cancellation of 10 shows before his schedule took a hiatus in November. And though the Turlock show is sold out and the community appears to be welcoming him back with an open-armed readiness to laugh at his jokes, there are those who arent about to laugh. Now or later....
One of those is Melvin Ferrarese, 79, of nearby Oakdale. Hes hawking the two tickets he bought for himself and his wife.
Weve seen Cosby before and he was terrific, but now with all this rape stuff, I just cant go, he said. Its too bad, and you just dont know for sure, but I have a wife and three daughters. Its just not right....
I know that in this country youre innocent before proven guilty, but the allegations alone are enough for me, said 46-year-old TimBrown, who in addition to running Lightly Used Books is an almond farmer. Ive always been a Bill Cosby fan, but after all this I wouldnt cross the street to watch him eat a bale of hay.
Lucky for Cos this is in the Central Valley rather than the Bay Area. He'd doubtless be greeted by protesters like Michael Vick was when his team played the Raiders in Oakland.
