(Reuters) - Police in a small Indiana town hauled a six-year-old from his elementary school and charged him with battery and intimidation after he kicked and threatened a principal, police said on Wednesday.

School officials called police, reporting that the student, who was not identified, had kicked Principal Patrick Lumbley and told him and Assistant Principal Jessica Poe that he was going to kill them, a Shelbyville police report said.
The student was yelling and screaming and lying on the floor of Poe's office when police arrived, the report said.
Poe led the student to a police car where an officer placed him in the back seat, buckled him in and drove him to the police department, the report said. He was not handcuffed.
Turner said he hoped the filing of juvenile charges would help get the child needed help.
"Putting him into the system can open up avenues perhaps the parents don't have," Turner said.

(12,629 posts)You can roll your eyes, but this is true.
When my uncle was dying, I promised him that I would do whatever I could to help his young son straighten up. After his dad's death, he got himself into all kinds of trouble. Truancy, shoplifting, drugs, getting into fights...etc.
His mother had no control over him. Not an excuse, just a fact. She needed help with him, and sought it. Because he had no criminal record, counseling would have cost her far more than she could ever hope to pay for.
So, when he finally commited a crime that was court-worthy (don't remember the charge), I went with his mom to the hearing. I held her hand, as she told the judge to take him. She cried, he cried...but he finally got the help he so desperately needed.
He was incarcinated in juvenile detention for about four months. He came home a different person. There were no more problems.
The child referred to in this article needs help. Perhaps his parents cannot afford it. If he can get that help soon, rather than the 4-6 weeks average wait mentioned on the local news tonight...well, that's a good thing.
I live 20 minutes away from this family. I much prefer reading about the boy getting arrested and some help at 6 years of age, over hearing that he had been shot dead 8 or 9 years from now.

(24,634 posts)So the system is not so much needed. That kind of system like juvie for a 6 year old is not necessary. And I will roll my eyes at it...because juvie means the child is away from his or her parents. And there for criminalizes the parents who may, by and large, not be related to the child's problem. I think it instigates the problem further than mitigates.

(24,634 posts)That would suggest you need some sort of medical care. And if you don't have insurance from your job...Most of the time you can get medicare/medicaid from your state and those have no copay or deductible and free of charge--or I should say it is directly part of all health insurance plans when initially mental health was not part of all insurance plans only some.

(45,851 posts)In our dog-eat-dog capitalist system "free" almost always implies a scam of some sort.
Indeed I was reading just a little while ago here on DU of collections agents working as hospital employees in the ER with access to medical records.
I damn sure don't want collections agents reading my medical files, particularly if those files are related to mental health.
