Burmese soldiers suspected of brutal rape and murder of 2 Kachin teachers
Villagers in Burmas Shan State are blaming army soldiers for the brutal rape and murder of two young Kachin teachers in a case that has caused local and international outrage.
The bodies of Maran Lu Ra (20) from Myikyina and Tangbau Hkawn Nan Tsin (21) from Waingmaw were found at their house in the church compound of Kawng Kha Shabuk village, about 20 miles east of Muse Town, Northern Shan State. They had been working in the village for about eight months as volunteer teachers for the Kachin Baptist Convention.
Kawng Kha Shabuk Village is in a government-controlled area. There is no army base in the village, but on January 17 about 30 troops from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 503, based in Kyaukme under Major Aung Soe Myint, marched into the village.
According to the Womens League of Burma (WLB) and the Kachin Womens Association of Thailand (KWAT) the soldiers based themselves in four houses around the village and posted guards around the village.
