(17,194 posts)That's funny, Trudeau wasn't even drawing for Yale then. It's strange, because Doonesbury has had a down on Bushco since Poppy rose to prominence, but that was 15 years after 1967. Why the exaggeration, since it adds nothing to the gag?

(17,194 posts)Not touchy, just curious. I've been reading Doonesbury since Trudeau was knee-high to a grasshopper. Mind you, his gags are often pointed in several directions at once. I wouldn't be surprised if the 1967 was intended as a joke on commercial exaggeration.

(12,157 posts)That would be the year when I met Poppy. I was a senor in high school and even though a news hound was pretty much apolitical. My friend's mother was one of the few republicans in Houston, Texas and she held a republican tea. My friend and I walked into his house and their was Poppy surrounded but these matrons. He immediately "glad handed" us. I don't know what it was but I couldn't wait to wash my hands. For some reason it was just icky. And I have never forgot the feeling.

(17,194 posts)He was part of a detail checking security on Marine One, and Reagan was quitting the vile weed at the time, but decided to cheat and asked him for a cigarette. Ol' Ron was perfectly charming, as always. Which has nothing to do with your story, but it's always intersting when the peasants get to interact with the aristocrats. I'm surprised you didn't contract an infectuous disease. I hope you counted your fingers after he shook your hand.

(21,742 posts)I was a cab driver in Chicago and his helicopter landed at Miegs Field by the lakefront. I had taken a couple of his "groupies" there to greet him. I stayed there to wait for a fare back to downtown and Nixons motorcade drove by. He was waving to all of his adoring fans from the back seat of his limo and as he looked right at me. My moment in the. sun came and my middle finger went up. (Almost like a reflex action). Then I got the a patented scowl. I just wish I had a camera at that moment. That was a moment I will always cherish.

(14,691 posts)She, Pat, the two kids and a Secret Service guy were walking on Third Ave. in Upper East Side of Manhattan. The kids were VERY well-dressed, even for that neighborhood. That's what caught my eye before I looked up and saw her. Then they entered a bakery and I continued on my way.

(28,075 posts)and pretty much under one of the flight paths.
One day a few of us were out smoking (I have since quit) and wondering why there were no planes flying over. Then it dawned on me that Bush was in town so all commercial traffic had stopped. Just about that time we saw Air Force One fly over -- and we all "saluted" though I also doubt anyone on the plane saw us. But we can hope - the plane was still pretty low at that point.

(8,267 posts)1967 was a halcyon year for the BFEE. "Congressman-elect" Pappy Bush was apparently considered odds-on favorite for the Republican candidate for president (wonder what happened there?) in the coming year, and Dubyah was newly engaged to a young Jewish co-ed who was attending Rice while Dubyah was at Yale. Other than an old engagement announcement, nothing can be found that explicates this non-event, and the families aren't talking.

(45,788 posts)But Doonesbury debuted in 1970. Bush was in public service before then. Maybe Trudeau was drawing cartons for his friends around then.
But mostly, it's a joke.

(9,426 posts)The forgotten brother. He was in charge of security at the WTC when 9/11 happened. Quietly left after that. Google him, plus Jennifer Fitzgerald and Vincent Ashe. Ashe was W's roomate at one of the ivy league schools, a fellow cheerleader. Fitzgerald was GHW's "companion" for over 10 years, almost caused a divorce.

(6,635 posts)light on the "1967" reference:
Doonesbury began as a continuation of Bull Tales, which appeared in the Yale University student newspaper, the Yale Daily News, beginning in September 1968. It focused on local campus events at Yale. The executive editor of the paper in the late 1960s, Reed Hundt, who later served as chairman of the FCC, noted that the Daily News had a flexible policy about publishing cartoons, stating that the paper published "pretty much anything."
