New Maryland Governor Opens an Assault on Environmental and LGBT Protections

When Larry Hogan was elected governor of Maryland last fall, it easily ranked as the biggest surprise of the midterm elections. Even in a bad year for Democrats, a Republican who never previously held elected office was not supposed to triumph over a promising young Democrat in a state Obama won twice by twenty-six points.

The son of a former Congressman and owner of a large real-estate business, Hogan projected himself as fiscal conservative during his race against Lt. Governor Anthony Brown—but also a moderate. His preamble to running for governor was forming Change Maryland, a proudly “non-partisan grassroots organization.”

Hogan has a friendly everyman persona that has earned him some pretty favorable coverage in local papers. (Some recent headlines from the neighboring Washington Post: “Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s appeal to ‘middle ground’ could revive state GOP” and “Md. Gov. Larry Hogan, the happiest, sweatiest guy at the inaugural ball.”)

But Hogan’s first days in office are proving to be anything but moderate. Rather, a familiar storyline is playing out: the friendly Republican gubernatorial candidate suddenly becomes a hardline conservative governor.

Almost contrived and coasting to the anointed win, while Hogan had backing by Koch funded ads which got the redneck vote out. All I could do is watch and SMH. Had Brown taken him on directly and forcefully I think the results would have been very different.

The biggest untruth he ran on was what they called the 'rain tax' which is really about water quality of the Chesapeake Bay, forcing developers to control runoff. The rednecks who will vote against anything called a tax lapped it up.

And I didn't like him he seemed to be full of himself and he was pretending to be moderate,I told him if he's a republican he can never have my vote. He asked why, I said I don't vote against my own interests if more people voted for their own interests, since mostof america is lower class due to twisted republican economic voodooLeftover from ray gun,you and your kind would never hold a seat in government,no republican knows whatPower is for. He was quiet.

He has a place in Southern Maryland, and he personally lobbied for the State legislature to enact gay rights. My personal opinion was that he truly wanted this Country to change, having seen his daughter enter into and find happiness in a solid relationship with a woman. At the time, she was considering running for a seat in Wyoming, and I believe he did not want that relationship to become an issue in her political pursuits.

This is the one and only post you will ever see me make on DU agreeing with Dick Cheney on something.
