Utah girl, 15, forced to wear a coat to school dance because teachers felt THIS dress was indecent for showing too much shoulder
Gabi Finlayson, 15, attended Preference Dance at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah, Saturday
She wore a delicate pink lace dress from Paris inspired by Audrey Hepburn
School official asked Gabi to cover up her outfit because it was in violation of Lone Peak's strict dress code
-!-!-
Speaking to the station KUTV, the high schooler said she was left feeling 'embarrassed' and insulted when a school official approached her in the middle of the party and asked her to put on a shawl or a coat.
'I didn't want to make a big scene so I said, yes. I had a coat in the car so I had to go back and get it,' said Gabi.
The young woman said she came away feeling angry and humiliated after being forced to wear a coat over her conservative dress for the entire duration of the party.
'Somehow my shoulders are sexualized,' Finlayson said. 'Like it's my responsibility to make sure the boys thoughts are not unclean.'

(37,573 posts)presumably it would be the Book of Mormon telling them so.
The same book that apparently tells them they can't drink coffee.
Although in one Mormon church, one of the members offered to buy me a Pepsi.
Of course, I told him "get thee behind me, satan."

(146,317 posts)Everything in Utah is run by Mormons. I'd be willing to bet that the entire school board and the entire school administration is made up of Mormons. It is a de facto Mormon school. It's possible that this girl isn't a Mormon, and maybe that's the real problem.
A school doesn't have to be owned by a church to be run by church people. In Utah, it would be rare for a school not to be run by Mormons, according to LDS principles.

(36,827 posts)Regardless of how well meaning the church is, you still have the inevitable problem of religionists forcing their dogma on everyone else.

(11,804 posts)Highland Utah is 97 to 98% Mormon. It seems like anyway you slice it Mormons are going to hold most of the political positions. If you have a problem with Mormons, or other religious folk holding office, I'm not sure what you say about a city like that. And it goes without saying that there are other cities similarly weighted towards other faiths.
I don't support this decision, as it seems pretty stupid. And full disclosure, I am a Mormon.

Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)then it's a pretty safe bet the church is going to expect some sort of influence on that candidate as a condition of that church's continued support. That's the way it works in Texas and I'm pretty sure we aren't alone in that regard. In an area where there's only one real denomination, I can only believe that influence is going to be even greater.

Seriously, thousands of years have past...cannot women ever be forgiven for one act? I will never understand why people want to belong to a faith based group that doesn't believe in forgiveness.
Again, seriously, I don't know all the exact details...but wasn't that the reason Jesus died on the cross?

(19,288 posts)I'll bet the expectations are that the same places be covered as what the top garment would cover which is over the biceps. The bottoms hit just above the knees.
She shouldn't have to be covered until she either takes out her endowments in a temple ceremony to go on a mission or gets married in the temple.

(146,317 posts)It's actually a very modest, chaste sort of look, I think. She could wear it to church on Sunday, I think. I'm not sure what bothered the school official. The lace? Maybe she just looked to nice for that sourpuss of an official. I don't know.
Utah's very strange, I guess.

(31,518 posts)The principal says that the dress code was known and that some other girls were also asked to cover up because their dresses violated the dress code.
I think the dress is lovely, also.
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)From my point of view, that was a very modest dress, actually. Nothing blatantly sexy about it. It was also perfect for a kid her age to wear to a dance. I was a HS student in the early 1960s, and remember similar dresses back then. Nobody thought they were indecent then, either. It's a classic style and very nice looking.
Arkansas Granny
(31,518 posts)I went to high school at the same time you did (Yay, Class of '64), apparently, and had dresses that looked very similar to that. Even in our straight laced, rural high school no one batted an eye.

(146,317 posts)That dress looks like one the actress might have worn, back in those days. It's a classic design, very simple and classy. It's also pretty and flattering for a slender girl. Audrey Hepburn was one of my favorites back in the day, largely because of her quiet demeanor while still being adventurous. I can't think of any better fashion role for girls, and many of the clothes from that period have a timeless appeal.
In fact, here she is in a Givenchy dress, holding an Oscar statue in 1954. The dress reminds me a little of the one in this story.
BTW, I'm class of '63.

I doubt Romny wil end up as a prophet anytime soon to be honest - the current president are in good health - and if Im not wrong - it is a rather stricht rule for even beeing considered as a prophet - mr Romney wil fall short in many levels - if he ever tried to be elected as the president of the church... And I also suspect - it exist some records from the time he was a bishop in a local district - who are less than perfect - even if the records wil not se the light of day - at least not on the outside of they who have some speciall responsiblity inside the church - it is damaging enough for Romneys posiblity of ending up as the Prophet seer and President of the Church...
And just for the record - I think Romney is a bad person - who dosen't deserve what he is given by a long shot.. Even if he have keept himself inside the boundiers of the law - he have crossed many moral lines being as rich as he is - and I doubt somehow he would be forgiven for what he have been doing for many years when it's time for him to take the case up with the "big man"...

(18,186 posts)directly above the one about our lovely First Lady going bare-headed in Saudi Arabia. Too funny.
I can't explain how it feels to be of the gender that is constantly told what we should be wearing by many of the other gender (and by many of our own. )
Forcing women to wear symbolic scraps or swathes of fabric really does appear to make some men feel exceptionally moral, all in control, all cool with god. How sad is that?
They are dependent on what another person does in order to feel worthy. Not just sad, dangerous.
These people are surely hated by anything divine. To be fair, most powerful Mormon leaders probably don't believe in their own narrative, but I imagine they like using the stories and the nefarious rules to CONTROL others. It's Big Business, Deluxe Prophet Edition: Lord And Savior Style.
I just have to say: It's very strange to strike such fear in the hearts of men, that even a smidge of one of our shoulders has superpowers, that the mere sight of the top of our heads can send those poor, weak men into lustful spasms and agonizing seizures of shame and sexual temptation.
We women need to find new ways to use our powers, and tell all the immoral, narcissistic, authoritarian big-mouthed men to shut up and worry about their own choices.
And this young lady is getting a wonderful lesson in theocracy. Hopefully, she will take what she's learning and use it to help make things better for people her age.
PEOPLE.* Her age.

According to the story, the dress was not actually a dress code violation. Some staff member didn't like it, or maybe just didn't like this kid and wanted to give her a hard time.

I think she looked proper in that dress - and I think it is a overstretch for the school to claim she should cover it up as it look like a rather classic dress to me..... I would say she looked nice in that dress - nothing special over it at all...
I think the school official overstepped her/his responsibility and should be reprimanded for it or at least told a few words about what the school official should not do...
If boys at the school have "unclean" thoughts about this dress - then its maybe some problem with them - not her - and maybe something the Church should recognize and try to address - instead of making her feel bad about a rather conservative dress - who I doubt would do much damage....
I have seen woman dress similar in my church - and no one have make notice about it - other than saying how a nice dress you have.... But then again, I suspect my church to be somewhat more liberal than many in Utah would have been.... And yes - I'm a mormon myself, just for the record... but This is just stupid, to make so much issue about a rather conservative dress... How conservative must the school official not be - if this dress is a issue...

(146,317 posts)It's sort of a perfect match for that girl, too. I can see why she picked it out. It's one of those things that you try on and say, "Yes. This one's perfect."
And maybe that was the problem for whatever school official was involved. It looked just too great on that kid. Too pretty, so she had to be forced to put on a coat to destroy the effect. Since she mentioned Audrey Hepburn as the inspiration, I'm thinking that's exactly the look she was going for. That Givenchy dress Hepburn wore to the Oscars can be found all over Google images if you search for Audrey Hepburn.
Demure is a great word for it, too. Not blatantly sexy, but a knockout look for that particular girl.
