Drink beer to ward off Alzheimer's: study
We may be a hop, skip and a jump from warding off neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's.
An ingredient in beer hops, xanthohumol (also known as Xn) has been shown to protect the brains of mice from cell damage.
An ingredient in beer hops, xanthohumol (also known as Xn) has been shown to protect the brains of mice from cell damage.
Wine may be the popular choice for health benefits, but Xn has been shown to fend off cancer, viruses, obesity and inflammation. Its brain-boosting benefits haven't been seriously studied until now.
Reporting in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Jianguo Fang and colleagues said that Xn was shown not only to fight free radicals but also jump-start signaling and protect cells from neurotoxicity.
Neuronal cells which are in the brain, spine and nerves are in limited supply over one's lifetime and especially susceptible to stress. This stress is thought to be one of the ways brain-related disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's begin.
Hops have been used in Chinese medicine for centuries.
The researchers' surprising counsel: To get the benefits of Xn, all it takes is a daily intake of products containing Xn, such as beer.

Buzz Kill: 3 Daily Cocktails May Boost Stroke Risk: Study
....People in their 50s and 60s who down more than two alcoholic beverages daily have a 34 percent higher risk of stroke compared to lighter drinkers and are more apt to suffer a stroke five years earlier in life regardless of their genetics or their other health habits, asserts a study released Thursday.
In fact, sipping beyond a two-drink maximum each day may boost a middle-aged person's stroke risk more than even traditional health dangers like high blood pressure and diabetes, say researchers who base their findings on tracking more than 11,000 Swedish twins for roughly half their lives.
We are seeing more and more people who are having strokes at younger ages and we don't necessarily appreciate how much alcohol use may be contributing to that," said Dr. Shazam Hussain, head of the Cleveland Clinic stroke program. He is not associated with the study, which was published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. ....

(68,644 posts)And wine doesn't have the benefits of beer, apparently.
And hard liquor, what's used in "cocktails", is what is mentioned in association with strokes.
