IBM Offers To Move Laid Off Workers To India

Last edited Thu Feb 26, 2015, 12:58 AM - Edit history (1)

Big Blue wants to help redundant U.S. employees relocate to developing markets, according to an internal document.

The climate is warm, there's no shortage of exotic food, and the cost of living is rock bottom. That's IBM's pitch to the laid-off American workers it's offering to place in India. The catch: Wages in the country are pennies-on-the-dollar compared to U.S. salaries.

...

A spokesman for Alliance@IBM, a workers' group that's affiliated with the Communications Workers of America but which does not have official union status at IBM, slammed the program. "IBM is not only offshoring IBM U.S. jobs but they want employees to offshore themselves through Project Match," said the spokesman.

An IBM spokesman said the program shouldn't be seen in that light. "It's more of a vehicle for people who want to expand their life experience by working somewhere else," said the spokesman. "A lot of people want to work in India."

On edit:
I was looking for info on the recent round IBM layoffs last month and didn't catch this was from 2009

I thought about deleting it but I think it is still relevant given the latest round of job losses.

I don't know if this made it to breaking news or not, its from Feb. 2.

Goddamn - it takes a special sort of sociopath to be a corporate spokesperson.

Oh, don't worry Hillary's got our backs. Right after she get's her $300,000 speaking fee.

Allowing this kind of export of jobs without imposing huge penalties on the exporting employers is really stupid. It is short-sighted and stupid.

I oppose Hillary Clinton's candidacy in part on the ground that she is too close to a lot of foreign interests. She does not care enough about American working people.

well translate into a decent standard of living in India ......and an adventure for some.

Upper level high tech jobs in India pay between 1 million and 3 million rupees per year....you could live very well using those rupees in a rupee economy. Very well.

much better in India.

A million rupees = a little over $16K. Assuming a 40 hour week, 52 weeks a year, that's less than $8/hr for those 'upper level high tech jobs'.

Yeah, the wonderful "rupee economy"!!!!

You can always find servants with your pittance because most people are sleeping (and shitting) on the streets! wonderful!! and soon we'll all be living like that!!!

I just love taking advantage of the misery of others in order to survive!!!!

The cost of living in India is literally a fraction....a full time cook would set you back 50000 rupees a year. Tops.
Food is a fraction, housing a fraction, entertainment a fraction, clothing, etc. etc.

It is far from hideous...hideous is some places in America as well.

If you move to India and take a job at 48,000 a year, regardless of how low the cost of living is, you will end up being stuck there because you don't have enough money to move back to the US. That was my point. Moving across country is expensive, moving overseas is far more expensive.
