Teen Girl Who Encouraged Friend to Kill Himself Charged in His Death: Police

A young woman who says she tried to help a Massachusetts teen before his 2014 suicide now faces manslaughter charges after text messages allegedly revealed that she encouraged him to take his own life.

In July of 2014, Fairhaven Police found Roy's body in his car parked behind a store. They believe he committed suicide by means of carbon monoxide poisoning. Now, 18-year-old Michelle Carter of Plainville is facing involuntary manslaughter charges, having been indicted as a youthful offender.

After Roy's body was found, according to documents, police accessed his cell phone. There, they found thousands of text messages between Roy and Carter.

"Michelle not only encouraged Conrad to take his own life, she questioned him repeatedly as to when and why he hadn't done it yet, right up to the point of when his final text was sent to her on Saturday evening, July 12, 2014," police wrote after reviewing the messages.

The new charges have reopened old wounds for the Roy family.

"All I can think of is his smiling face," said Conrad's grandmother, Janice Roy. "He used to come play with his cousins on the beach."

Police also allege Carter misled friends and Roy's family members when he was missing. The documents say that in other texts following his death, she told friends she heard him killing himself over the phone.

Police say Roy had told Carter he was scared to leave his family, but that Carter encouraged him to commit suicide.

"When he actually started to carry out the act, he got scared again and exited his truck," read the court documents. "But instead of telling him to stay out of the truck and turn off the generator Carter told him to 'get back in.'"

if her friend died people would feel so bad for her - but apparently she needs remedial training, how could she not know they would find the texts - as a last act he would blow up the truck or something? gee duh.

Ultimately it is a craving for attention--the same reason someone says they Saw nuns being shot in El Salvador, or was on a plane in Iraq that was shot down, or dodged sniper fire in Bosnia. It's self aggrandizement, whether it is deliberate or self delusional.

get her for more that threats and maybe failure to come to his aid. A lawsuit would produce more results---assuming she has any money. Maybe they can sue the cell phone carrier.

The suicide happens in July, then in September the girl organizes a fund raiser for mental health awareness and uses the boy's name -- "Homers (it was a softball tournament) for Conrad."

She is also a founding member of "Connect-to-Cure", an organization that raises money for cancer victims.

Carter was also a founding member of an organization called Connect-To-Cure, a fundraiser that sells $10 bracelets to raise money for cancer patients at Boston Children’s Hospital.

She stopped by the hospital to participate in a charity event, according to an article published in The Plainville Times — three weeks after she was arraigned on the manslaughter charge.

Perhaps the guilt is consuming her, or perhaps she is putting on a very public show to deflect blame. Perhaps a bit of both.

There is an enormous amount of social status being a head of a charity. Plus, as a friend of the deceased she would also make herself the center of the grief attention of their peer group.

Social status is a drug. It makes our brains feel so good. So people seek it out. Heck, ever notice why politicians are such crazy narcissists ? The social status makes their brain feel good. Plus it feels nice bossing other people around.

She talked this boy into killing himself and then enjoyed the sympathy given to her afterwards.

Isn't that a sign of Munchausen syndrome? If she ever has kids in the future, I'd be very concerned for their welfare.

cruel, absurd and sometimes murderous thoughts that would not occur to one to express in a face to face human encounter.

Not every mean and venal fantasy deserves expression and the iPod is not a therapist.

and I hope she learns the errors of her nasty ways. There is hope that she can become a better person, as young as she is, although I have a few doubts. But there is still hope for her, I suppose.
