Exclusive: Obama says Iran must halt key nuclear work for at least a decade

(Reuters) - Iran must commit to a verifiable freeze of at least 10 years on sensitive nuclear activity for a landmark atomic deal to be reached, but the odds are still against sealing a final agreement, U.S. President Barack Obama told Reuters on Monday.

Interviewed at the White House, Obama moved to dial back tensions over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned speech to Congress on Tuesday opposing the Iran deal, saying it was a distraction that would not be "permanently destructive" to U.S. Israeli ties.

Talks between major powers and Iran to restrict Tehran's nuclear capabilities in exchange for an easing of sanctions have reached a critical stage ahead of an end of March deadline for a framework deal and a June 30 date for a final agreement.

Obama's comment about the time frame for a freeze represents one of the U.S. government's strongest signals yet of its red line for a successful deal.

1. "Bibi speaking uninvited to Congress two weeks before an Israeli election is a 'distraction'."

Obama essentially saying "big freaking deal", makes no difference to the adults.

Obama and his Cabinet will not be dragged into a personality clash as the media is foaming at the mouth to start, and Bibi is backing down from....with frustrating lack of success.

This speech is clear a politically motivated event, even the media admit that now after weeks of denial...so why is anyone still applauding this foreign nation's direct interference in American politics? In the middle of the said foreign nations national election campaign?

Bibi is the author of his ow misfortune...why rescue him?

Stay calm and carry on, let the mouth breathers breath. I am with Obama.

"Iran is just a few years (3-5) away from having a nuclear weapon."

That my friends, was in 1992. Also in 1995, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2008, etc etc etc.

This is the longest 5 fucking years I have ever seen.

once was "almost" also in possession of WMD's? These are politicians who do not shy away from exploiting fear, even ginning up fear as fuel for their ridiculous policies.

We have all seen this passion play before.

I mean I'm supposed to believe that Iran is so suicidal that they would drop a nuke on Israel?

Funny, if I were Iranian, I'd be wanting a nuke just as a tool for "Mutually assured destruction" MAD.

I swear when the cold war ended I figured we all learned our lesson and that term "MAD" was gone for good. Sheesh...

Even broaching or treading near the truth of Israel's flaunting of all world nuclear treaties signed by all but a handful of rogue nations....is going to get one labelled all kinds of things by folks who think they matter.

Bibi is treading near the territory of losing the automatic American veto vote at the UN...no wonder Bibi is trying to inconspicuously remove the knife from the back of the American government exclusively responsible for foreign affairs.

Bibi has an election to win!

Attention to those "who think they matter".. What I meant to say was "poor, poor Israel, all alone and no way to defend themselves".

Again to those "who think they matter", I apologize, my comments they were taken out of context by the Liberal Media(namely Fred Sanders) and if you need I would be happy to turn him in for rendition.

All sorts of horrible things were always only a few years away if we did not immediately take whatever action the speaker was advocating; which usually involved spending lots of money. (The distribution of which, of course, the speaker was always most qualified for) There was going to be nuclear war, an ice age, planet-wide heat wave, massive world flooding, drying oceans, world-wide famine, etc. So, I have learned to take all the 'Chicken Little" stuff with a grain of salt, and try to get by day-to-day. I'm just glad that i won't be around much longer. I'm so tired.
