CPD removes grenade from retirement community closet

The Columbus Police Hazardous Devices Unit, commonly known as the bomb squad, removed what is believed to be a live World War II-era hand grenade from a closet in an apartment of a local retirement community on Monday.

The resident, a World War II veteran, had died recently and a maintenance worker was cleaning out his apartment when he found the grenade in a box of miscellaneous items, Sgt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police spokesman, said.

Police confirmed it was believed to be a live "pineapple style" hand grenade, but are conducting tests to see if the more than 65-year-old device could have exploded.
