Speeches were few and brief, with especially poignant remarks from Shatner, who said, Im remembering my friend of 50 years, Leonard Nimoy, who cherished everything the Red Cross stands for. In his honor, let us all perform an act of kindness for somebody. Were guessing the haters on social media missed that part. Trolls. -

(23,542 posts)People who aren't elderly or around the elderly don't understand how difficult it is to travel. People like to judge. I know they are public figures. But, come on at 83 I really think people should leave him alone or at least stop calling him "kirk".
Lurks Often
(5,455 posts)at least without a lot more information we'll probably never see.
I'm fairly certain having a celebrity at a function often involves agents, money being spent (R&B and transportation costs at a minimum), signed documents with penalties for not appearing and guests who plan on coming and donating because a specific celebrity will be there.
As an aside, I read the book Inside Star Trek: The Real Story by Herb Solow and Robert Justman (who were both producers on the show) and both spoke fairly well of Shatner. IIRC they said he was a professional who showed up on time, prepared and ready to work. Certainly Shatner as lead was concerned about his role on the show and his future after the show, but that is hardly uncommon among actors, especially when it impacts how much one is making and how it will affect their career.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)It seems obvious to me that he would want to be at his good friend's service, and that he would want to honor a commitment and help the Red Cross raise money. Lacking a working transporter, he couldn't attend both functions, so he made a reasonable choice. Are people giving him grief over that?
