WASHINGTON — Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, was among the hard-line conservatives pushing for Republicans not to support spending legislation for the Department of Homeland Security unless it included language rolling back President Barack Obama’s executive actions shielding those in the country illegally from deportation.

King had urged his party to stick to its guns, even if that risked triggering a shutdown of the department.

Reps. Adrian Smith and Jeff Fortenberry, Nebraska Republicans, and Rep. David Young, R-Iowa, joined King in voting Tuesday to shoot down the department’s funding bill, which no longer included the immigration language.

Still, the bill passed. King told reporters after the vote that he was ready to move on to the next battle.
