Bank of Canada is pleading with Star Trek fans to stop Spocking its five dollar bills. Since Leonard Nimoys death, Canadian folks have been Spocking the hell out of the five dollar bill that features a portrait of Canadas seventh prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

(24,653 posts)It's not illegal, so if I were a Canadian I'd have Spocked the hell out of all my fivers.

(50,338 posts)Canada changed to a plastic-like bill in 2013 and is much less conducive to Spocking sadly.

The pictures are also different on those horrible new bills too. Think nail polish might spock them?

(50,338 posts)I am hoping to get even one to keep, maybe even 'Spock' it before they are all gone. I agree re the new bills, horrible. Nail polish, hmmm, might be worth a try for sure, great idea!

(50,338 posts)is quite different than the one being currently 'Spocked'.
The material used in the new bill is not as absorbent as the old paper ones but, after reading your question and having one of the new bills, I tried a few different types of markers and found one, a black Jiffy Marker, that worked and didn't come off upon handling.

(55,981 posts)Also, the small change to the short life span of a small percentage of bills, I believe will be negligible and should be offset by the thousands removed from circulation for keepsakes. And the worst thing they can do is call attention to the practice.

(37,748 posts)I was merely addressing the query "why do they care" with information provided in the story. Any additional post-hoc qualifiers and allegations of what will be should be, I imagine directed towards the Canadian government as I can't really do anything about it.

What's the problem?

there are security features on banknotes that can be used to tell if a bill in counterfeit.
We have them as well.

(30,247 posts)As a big fan of Star Trek I find this highly amusing. Although, I understand the Bank of Canada's point. I wonder how many of the bills were defaced. It must be a large number for the Bank to come out and make a statement.
Long Live and Prosper, Canada.

(3,732 posts)I was originally going to propose an obvious solution: issue money that honors Spock and the ideals of Star Trek. But one of the ideals of Star Trek is that they had transcended the use of money...
