Senate Democrats Force Mitch McConnell To Cancel Vote On Iran Bill
By: Jason Easley
Thursday, March, 5th, 2015, 7:02 pm

Senate Democrats forced Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to back off of a plan to turn a bill related to Iran into a partisan attack on President Obama.

After McConnell tried to use Netanyahu’s speech to doublecross Democrats who supported a bill that would call for the Senate to review any agreement made by President Obama with Iran regarding their nuclear program, nine Senate Democrats withdrew their support for the legislation.

The Democrats told McConnell:

On a day defined by serious discourse about Iran’s illicit nuclear weapons program, at a moment when legislators are contemplating the most serious national security issue of our time, we are disappointed that you have proceeded outside of regular order which suggests that the goal of this maneuver is to score partisan political points, rather than pursue a substantive strategy to counter Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The deadline for a political framework agreement with Iran is March 24, and a final agreement is not expected to be reached until the end of June. There is no immediate or urgent need to circumvent the Committee process and we are disappointed that you’ve pursued this partisan course of action.

We remain committed to working on this bill in a bipartisan manner. As such, and as a result of your actions, we will only vote for this bill after it has gone through the regular mark-up process in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and after the March 24th deadline for the political framework agreement.

McConnell’s office announced that they were canceling their planned vote “It is clear that Senate Democrats will filibuster their own bill — a bill they rushed to introduce before the White House cut a deal with Iran. So, instead, the Senate will turn next to the anti-human-trafficking legislation while Democrats decide whether or not they believe they and Congress as a whole should be able to review and vote on any deal the President cuts with the leaders of Iran.”

Senate Democrats put a quick end to McConnell’s scheme to divide the president and his party. This is the second time less than two weeks that McConnell has been forced to cave on his plans. McConnell promised an aggressive agenda that would bend the president to his will, but what has happened is that Democrats has asserted firm control over the Senate’s agenda.

McConnell tried to pull a fast one on the Democrats who supported the bill, so the bipartisan support quickly vanished for the legislation. Sen. McConnell can do nothing without Democratic support. The Majority Leader is learning fast that there is a heavy price to be paid for his years of obstruction.

Let's be frank, or roger or john, the American Taliban aka Republican Party TeaParTY is attempting to overthrow the US government.

They try and close it down, they commit treason by inviting foreigners to come and shit on the president.

Good for the Dems for having the President's back in this. If this agreement succeeds, it will be historic as well as scuttling the fevered war dreams of the perma-war profiteers. I'll give major props to the President for trying to work this out despite the massive effort from his own countrymen to destroy his shrewd, stabilizing peace effort.

We didn't like it when you and your buddies were doing it and know what we don't like it now either but this has to come to an end somewhere and no amount of talking sense to you made an ounce of difference so we dems have to take these steps. F* off turtle face

Democratic congress critters want to debate the issues and arrive at a just and fair opinion but you and your petty peons haven't even made an attempt at doing that, when you could have. turd head.

My apologies to the faint of heart for the words I chose to use.

That doesn't seem to be the case. For all the obstructionism outrage of the last few years, most of us seem fine with it as long as it's US obstructing THEM. You can try to justify it with a "it's different when WE do it because", but you know it really isn't.

Abso-fucking-lutely delicious!!!!!!!!!!

BACK ATCHA, pal!

Don't like it when it comes back to bite ya, do you, Yertle!?!

I'm just really glad to see that the Dems learned from that sordid six-year Sore Loserman/poor sportsmanship episode!

I am LOVING this:

"McConnell tried to pull a fast one on the Democrats who supported the bill, so the bipartisan support quickly vanished for the legislation. Sen. McConnell can do nothing without Democratic support."

AND this:

"Senate Democrats put a quick end to McConnell’s scheme to divide the president and his party. This is the second time less than two weeks that McConnell has been forced to cave on his plans. McConnell promised an aggressive agenda that would bend the president to his will, but what has happened is that Democrats has asserted firm control over the Senate’s agenda."

He's finding out all about that "turnabout is fair play" thing. And I couldn't be happier! If indeed the set-up means "minority rule," then so be it. That dynamic is gonna work for US now. In the house that mcconnell built, we're in the minority now, so that means WE rule.

These Democratic Senators have all indicated that they believe Congress should sign off on any negotiated settlement with Iran, and with solid Republican opposition likely to any deal, with these Democrats included we may get dangerously close to a veto proof super majority in the Senate that could support Netanyahu's position and kill the deal that emerges, if one does.. It is good that they are opposing fast racking opposition to the negotiations with Iran, but this group of Democratic Senators have only promised to give Obama time to negotiate a settlement before any Congressional action, not to support that settlement. They still may join with Republicans to try to kill it once the terms to any deal with Iran are finally announced.

The stalemate and consequent failure to arrive at agreement on ANY substantive public policy achievements offers only momentary and fleeting victory for our party. The long term consequences of this failure is to reinforce a certain electoral bloc's perception that the federal government is worthless--period; in turn, this sustains a conservative narrative and world view.

How do we overcome this calculus? OFFER SOLUTIONS.

Right now the Senate is controlled by Republicans so they set the agenda. I think it's clear which party is the actual loser, though. It's the party that can't even get their own bills passed and has no interest in governing.

Democrats at least try to do the job they are getting paid for.
