The Iraqis have been incredibly ineffective. They abandoned their arms and equipment the moment ISIS entered Mosul, and have done little since then. They recently announced that they are going to take Mosul back....in April. Giving these guys plenty of time to inflict as much damage until then.

The Kurds have been great at holding their own in their own territories and defending their own people. Not so much for minorities in their region.

The Iranians have been supplying help to the Iraqis and Syrians as needed. With the latter, however, they are more focused on wiping out the Free Syrian Army and other moderate to semi-extremist groups. Those groups pose a bigger threat to the regime than the savages of ISIS. Leaving ISIS as the only alternative to Assad allows both the Syrians and the world to rally around the regime as the lesser of two evils.

As for the Saudis, this call to arms is nothing more than a charade. ISIS shares the same ideology as the Wahhabi country, and according to a report by NPR, Saudi and the Gulf states remain the biggest funders of ISIS.

Dude, I'm from the region. I have family in both Syria and Iraq. The ones in Syria are in the Khabur region where recently 200 Assyrians (some that we know) were abducted by ISIS. So, um, yeah, kind of familiar with the area. The only areas of Mosul that are under attack are the archeological sites that ISIS is destroying. Kobani was taken with help from American-led airstrikes.

I can't imagine we bothered training htem to be an effective force - after all, we don't want nations with strong militaries in the middle east.

Qatar--whether purposefully or inadvertently, it's not clear, but the idea was to use Sunni jihadis to overthrow Assad and hamper Iranian influence.

They recently announced that they would block refugees fleeing ISIS from Syria and Iraq from crossing into Turkey, but they somehow "cannot control" the foreign fighters that routinely cross into those countries from Turkey.

If a "Kurdistan" is created, a sizeable chunk of Turkey would like to join it. The Turkish government would prefer that to not happen.

Keep the fighting in Syria and Iraq so it isn't rebels in Turkey.

Just like the Israelis.

Nothing both of these groups would like to see better than the USA engaged in another losing battle. The Sauds are fairly obviously against the Western life (except when they go on junkets) while the Zionists want someone else to deflect anger away from their power/land grabs.

And the americans are suckers for the PR/lobbyist machines.
