Sacred ground in the struggle for civil rights.

(63,912 posts)I know now there is a hunger in this country for a spiritual renewal of human rights. Folks are so sick of business as usual. They want renewal and spiritual hope for a better tomorrow.

Thanks to all those who made that journey across the bridge to honor the legacy of 50 years ago and represent those of us who could not be there.

(42,307 posts)This weekend commemoration was so well done. I will never forgot Rep. Lewis and President Obama's speeches. They were stirring.

(47,476 posts)even though, of course, it is now associated with important events.
Just found out that in 1877, Pettus was named Grand Dragon of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan..
Beautiful pictures, still.

(7,358 posts)Alabama will put up a fight no doubt. They always do. They're still waving the Confederate Flag in so many ways.

(18,124 posts)we'll probably still be marching for voting and civil rights. Nice event but to still be marching to show ones discontent with 'rulers' that make the laws concerning and impacting ones everyday existence, you know, executions in the street of unarmed POC, women's rights under attack, prisons for profit overwhelmingly filled with POC, voter ID laws in every republican state and this 50 years from the first event at this bridge is a prime example of american hypocrisy. It's how the one percent can keep us divided by still having to do something like this and have the racist pigs that make up the base of the RW and their media scream about the POTUS talking about the need for the ELIMINATION of voter ID laws that STILL restrict voting in our 'exceptional' democracy. What fucking hypocrisy and lies america is built and maintained upon......
