"You are an old man who thinks of the world in terms of nations and borders"
In 1976, Paddy Chayefsky suggested that the world no longer operated as a system of nations. Ned Beatty explained to Peter Finch that the world was now a system of dollars, rubles, francs, yens, pounds, and deutchmarks.
For the last 6 years, we've seen it's impossible for the GOP in Washington to reach across the aisle to fellow Americans who count themselves as members of the Democratic Party. Instead, as witnessed in the last 6 weeks, it's starting to appear that our GOP is much more capable of reaching across the oceans to fellow rabid conservatives in other countries who are intent, as is our GOP, to maintain the current world order.
Sheldon Adelson isn't a US right wing phenom - he's a global right winger, providing as much, if not more financial support to Israel's right wing. Today's open letter wasn't to influence the negotiations as much as it was an open statement of support for Iran's right wing equally intent on derailing these negotiations. We have many GOP legislators who would, if given the choice, replace Obama's picture on the wall with Putin's.
Feels like we're seeing more and more public alignment of conservative vs. liberal that transcends borders. Paddy was right.
Great video - worth 5 minutes. I think Beatty was on screen for all of about 6 minutes in the entire movie and he was nominated for an Oscar. Powerful scene almost 40 years later.
