MSNBC's Phil Griffin: I would like to bring Olbermann back

Source: FTVLive

Most feel that Phil Griffin is a dead man walking as the boss of MSNBC.

Sources tell FTVLive that new NBC News head Andy Lack will likely hand Griffin his walking papers sometime next month.

So, for his part, Griffin is in "hail mary" mode and willing to try just about anything to get MSNBC's dismal ratings up.

MSNBC sources tell FTVLive that Griffin has openly suggested to staff that he would like to bring back Keith Olbermann into MSNBC prime time.

Maybe a pre-recorded weekend gig, an hour long thing to start, that does "Big Issues" and can be re-run a few times during the week, to see how it rolls, and then maybe transition him to a half hour or one hour format four days a week...?

50. Looking Back at When MSNBC Fired Antiwar Phil Donahue & Amy Goodman Called Out Network on Live TV
Fri Mar 20, 2015, 07:54 PM
Mar 2015

Watch the full interview with Phil Donahue on Democracy Now! at http://owl.li/jiiAe. In 2003, the legendary television host Phil Donahue was fired from his prime-time MSNBC talk show during the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The problem was not Donahue's ratings, but rather his views: an internal MSNBC memo warned Donahue was a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war," providing "a home for the liberal antiwar agenda at the same time that our competitors are waving the flag at every opportunity." But that wasn't the end of the story: during a live appearance on MSNBC in July 2006, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman criticized the network for Donahue's firing. Donahue joins Goodman on Democracy Now! to look back at the episode and the lessons it holds for media in a time of war.

Get rid of the RW hosts. Bring back Olbermann--without putting him on a short leash; put Ed Shultz on at 8, when he used to have his show after he temporarily cancelled his show to be with his wife, who was suffering from cancer at the time; and lose the right-wing talking heads in the morning. That's just for starters.

Morning Blow - even the evening stuff is off my watch for quite some time... If I want real news, I'll watch Al Jazeera or BBC America or internet superior offerings.

Funny, that I still read the paper, because there are some traditional things viewers like. I also remember the days of commentary at the end of network news, which is the genesis of Olbermann's style. Well, that, plus, Olbermann gives a nod to those seekers of truth on the internets.

It's not a hard formula… just not a corporate driven one. And, as long as they have so few in charge of so much NOBODY is going to bring this back to MSNBC.

I do wonder if Keith would do it, he seems to be in a career nostalgic mode on his ESPN show.

Griffin indeed should never have fired Donahue - the stipulations he put on him was bad enough - he had to have two conservatives on for every liberal, and he counted as a liberal. That was one really sad chapter as Phil couldn't tolerate anyone questioning the rush to an unnecessary war. Worse yet he replaces him with ultra conservative fascist slime ball Michael Savage.

Get rid of Phil G, try to talk Keith back, then get Amy Goodman, Cenk, and Thom Hartmann if they can. I'd love Donahue back but doubt he'd do it at this stage of his life.

He really didn't behave well during that period of time--he screwed Al Gore over in a big way, more than once. He expected a start up to have all the bells and whistles--rather like expecting a 61 VW Beetle to ride like a 2015 Lexus.

I found that stunningly unprofessional.

Just sayin'.

He was recently suspended, this year, by ESPN AGAIN for getting in a pissing match on Twitter.

Of course ESPN knows him--my point is that ESPN knows how to ride herd on him, to keep him in a box. I think he works best with "parameters." He gets hubris-laden otherwise. It's a failing, despite the fact that he knows how to create compelling TV. The presenter should not overshadow the story, and he sometimes does.

ESPN[edit]
In 1992, Olbermann joined ESPN's SportsCenter, a position he held until 1997 with the exception of a period from 1993–1994 when he was at ESPN2. He joined ESPN2 as their "marquee" personality to help launch the network.[24][25] He often co-hosted SportsCenter 11 PM show with Dan Patrick, the two becoming a popular anchor team. In 1995, Olbermann won a Cable ACE award for Best Sportscaster.[20] Olbermann later co-authored a book with Patrick called The Big Show about their experiences working at SportsCenter; he also said that the short-lived ABC dramedy Sports Night was based on his time on SportsCenter with Patrick, ABC having been co-owned with ESPN since 1985 (ESPN now produces all sports coverage on ABC, which is branded ESPN on ABC).[26] In his last year with KCBS before moving east to work for ESPN, Olbermann's salary was $475,000 but started "just over $150,000" with ESPN.[27] He made $350,000 at the end of his tenure at ESPN.[28]
Early in 1997, Olbermann was suspended for two weeks after he made an unauthorized appearance on The Daily Show on Comedy Central with then-host and former ESPN colleague Craig Kilborn. At one point in the show, he referred to Bristol, Connecticut (ESPN's headquarters), as a "'Godforsaken place."[28] Later that year, Olbermann abruptly left ESPN under a cloud of controversy, apparently burning his bridges with the network's management;[29] this began a long and drawn-out feud between Olbermann and ESPN. Between 1997 and 2007, incidents between the two sides included Olbermann's publishing an essay on Salon.com in November 2002, titled "Mea Culpa", in which he stated: "I couldn't handle the pressure of working in daily long-form television, and what was worse, I didn't know I couldn't handle it."[30] The essay told of an instance when his former bosses remarked he had "too much backbone," a claim that is literally true, as Olbermann has six lumbar vertebrae instead of the normal five.[30]
In 2004, Olbermann was not included in ESPN's guest lineup for its 25th anniversary SportsCenter "Reunion Week," which saw Craig Kilborn and Charley Steiner return to the SportsCenter set. In 2007, ten years after Olbermann's departure, in an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, he said: "If you burn a bridge, you can possibly build a new bridge, but if there's no river any more, that's a lot of trouble." During the same interview, Olbermann stated that he had recently learned that as a result of ESPN's agreeing to let him return to the airwaves,[clarification needed] he was banned from ESPN's main (Bristol, Connecticut) campus.[31]

...It was announced on July 17, 2013, Olbermann will host his own one hour nightly show on ESPN2. The two-year contract allows him to deviate from the topic of sports, into realms such as "pop culture and current events,"[41] as well as politics (a right Olbermann claims he doesn't intend to exercise).[42]
Olbermann was suspended by ESPN in 2015 for the week following Penn State University's annual philanthropy THON due to a Twitter exchange he had with Penn State supporters.[43] In the Twitter exchange, Obermann stated, "PSU students are pitiful." Later, prior to apologizing, Olbermann stated, "I'd like to thank the students and alums of Penn State for proving my point about the mediocrity of their education and ethics." [44][45][46][47] Olbermann apologized on his program upon his return March 2 but noted, "I’m much more sorry about batting practice (i.e. trolling or cyber bullying). So for me, batting practice ends.”[48]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Olbermann#ESPN

In between all that, he was demoted, then fired by Faux for gossiping about his boss's plans to unload the Dodgers--now, his boss is an asshole, but who save an idiot tells tales about the guy who signs your paycheck? The guy has a flair for the excessively dramatic, and he's immature. Imprudent. No FILTER.

Twitter fights with college kids? Really?

Just because someone says things that I tend to agree with (and I did agree with him more often than not when he was on MSNBC, and his goading and baiting was amusing during the rather dark Bush era) doesn't mean I have to find their character as a person compelling or appealing. In his case, I think he has personal issues and he's not a very nice person--even though, as I said, I think he's right on the money lots of times (his assessment of Scott Brown, e.g. was spot-on).

He's probably right where he needs to be, and I'm betting that contract is VERY detailed with regard to what he can, and cannot do. If he steps out of line, like he did goading those college students on social media, he pays. I guess he understands the limits when his purse strings get yanked, and his contract allows for that.

Gore et. al. took AJ's offer because they knew they couldn't get a better deal for that network, and they had been running the place on a tight budget (which was why KO was so perpetually irritated--he wanted Five Star Facilities at a Motel Start-Up). That little issue needed to be resolved and I wouldn't be at all surprised if AJ picked up a piece of that little "Get Gone KO" pie.

Had it gone to court, KO would have lost--he had a "No Disparagement" clause in his contract and he repeatedly disparaged both individuals and the organization in social media. It would have been a Pyrrhic victory, though, because the network didn't have any money.

For this reason, I don't think KO got much out of that settlement at all, save the opportunity to NOT lose a case in a big way in court.

He also admitted to Letterman that he "screwed up:"

He doesn't work or play well with others. His behavior at CURRENT was a blatant demonstration of that. He sure didn't believe enough in the "progressive cause" to be a team player, that's for sure.

If Gore and his associate didn't know Olbermann's reputation at that point, then they were the most clueless, stupid people on the planet. And, I find that difficult to believe, although given the way they ran their network, perhaps it shouldn't be unbelievable. They made promises that they couldn't keep, and no matter how much you bash Olbermann, that fact isn't going to change. Having said that, I'm done with this shit.

82. Gore et. al. believed that others--like KO--would put ideals first.

They likely thought that he'd put his ideological beliefs in front of his paycheck--they were wrong. That doesn't make THEM bad, it's the exact opposite--they tend to think the best of people. If that's a failing, well, I like those kinds of failures--tells me there's hope for the world, that not all people are assholes. Just the ones who liken themselves to ten million dollar chandeliers...

I remember listening to him on the old Air America radio show. He is great (imo).
Ron's Wikipedia page:

Also, keep the "Morning Joe" show ( the 3 hour format), change the name and immediately shit-can Scarborough as the host.
I like Hardball (with Chris), Big Ed, Rev. Al and of course Rachel.

78. MSNBC should give us an actual liberal channel. The ratings would soar.
