I've never heard of them before, and they just bought our nearly abandoned Memorial Mall here in Sheboygan.

(2,870 posts)like Kroger and Albertsons. They are big in Michigan. Typically they are supermarkets/hypermarkets with a deli, pharmacy, bakery, etc.

(45,319 posts)They were one of the very worst major companies and started making progress about 2009. Their HRC rating was 8% while Whole Foods was 90% and Walmart 40%. Last year they hit 70% which is a great leap and hopefully a meaningful trend.
As far as I know, some locations are Union and others are not. I could be wrong.

(1,735 posts)The stores are very good and clean with fresh produce and diverse offerings. But.....owners, who are out of Grand Rapids are strongly allied with DeVos family that supports very right wing causes. Your choice.

(23,720 posts)Miejers are all over Michigan, very popular. I think their prices are a little high, I shop for the sales items. I worked at one of their gas stations for a couple of months, they start out minimum wage with automatic raises every 750 hours worked. Unionized, however, employees don't seem active in it. Good for an extra side job if you have the time and need the extra money. What else you want to know?

(12,296 posts)... it would be similar to Meijer in product line.
They're all over Indiana, too. If I had to pick between them & WalMart, despite having higher prices, I'd pick Meijer.

(1,110 posts)I remember shopping with my mother at Meijer back in the 1950's when it was just a grocery store.
Meijer developed the idea of the superstore with Meijer Markets and Thrifty Acres in the early 1960's. This combined a traditional grocery store with the then fairly new "discount department store" idea.
I live in Illinois now, and Meijer has had a presence in the Chicago suburbs for several years. We regularly shop at Meijer for groceries, but we also often buy clothing, household goods, etc., there. Yesterday at Meijer, I bought a pair of jeans, a nice tee shirt, a watch battery, and some eye shadow. The total, including sales tax, was about $35.00.

Great selection, great prices. The employees are treated well. They put Target to shame.

(21,565 posts)they are absolutely horrid. they are basically wal-marts without as much market share, but their company is modeled after Wal-Mart. work your employees till they drop, pay them as little as you can, offer customers lowest price and treat them like shit.
they actually had a union though when family member worked there. but that was the late 90s. have no idea if its still there
