how would DUers go about stopping this site from allowing ULTRA-intrusive ads

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by SYFROYH (a host of the General Discussion forum).

If DU needs money and runs some ads, OK. But lately, both on DU and generally, I have seen an exponentially rising number and intrusiveness of ads -- eg "you have been selected for a free gift" with ONLY an accept button and impossible to turn off without disconnecting DU altogether and signing back in. This kind of ad that can't and won't be readily erased is becoming increasingly common. Both DU as a site should ban them and they should be banned in law, and if there is some protestation about free speech (somehow with all the crap that's tolerated, my own speech never seems to be protected) then it should at least be heavily taxed.
Indeed any ad that delays or blocks even part of your view, requiring an extra click to get rid of it, should be heavily taxed -- a good way to both raise revenue and to reduce crap on the internet

I AM FED UP WITH THIS

I went to My Account and could not see a way to turn on the ads.

I guess that is a feature that would probably not be in great demand.

As far as I know, DU's ads are limited to Google Ads.

Sounds like a browser hijacker on the client.

When I look at DU without being logged in the ads are not nearly so intrusive as the ads on sites like huffingtonpost, although I wouldn't know for certain, because I don't have Adobe Flash on my computer, I block pop-ups, and I've disallowed animation in ads. But I don't use ad blockers at all. The owners of sites I don't pay for deserve the ad revenue. If a site's ads make me crazy, I don't go there.

To the original poster, I suggest:

and DU's very own Computer Help and Support Group:

I used to do that with the NRA and others...

if they want to advertise on my browser, I'll oblige their act and click on their link.

It takes 10 seconds and DU gets $1 or more in return. (Remember, only one linkage per day per site will be paid.)

I finally joined during their Valentine's Day Membership Drive.

As a general rule we don't allow threads that criticize or complain about DU operations (such as ads) in General Discussion. We call that disruptive meta discussion.

From the pinned thread in GD:
DISRUPTIVE META-DISCUSSION
Positive threads about Democratic Underground or its members are are permitted.

Threads complaining about Democratic Underground or its members; threads complaining about jury decisions, locked threads, suspensions, bannings, or the like; and threads intended to disrupt or negatively influence the normal workings of Democratic Underground and its community moderating system are not permitted.
