Dr. Ben Carson, a potential Republican presidential candidate, on Wednesday condemned the shooting of an unarmed black man by a white South Carolina police officer. "Its horrible to see an execution take place in the street like that," Carson told Buzzfeed News.
"Certainly that policeman was too quick to do it. I dont know if you can always generalize in a situation like that but certainly that officer was wrong," Carson said when asked if police are sometimes too quick to use their guns. "And I think its so obvious that he was wrong -- that this provides an excellent opportunity for law enforcement personnel across the country to really come out and condemn this. And if they do that tells us a lot. And if they dont that tells us a lot."
North Charleston, S.C., Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager was charged with murder on Tuesday after a video appeared to show him shooting an unarmed black man, Walter Scott, in the back multiple times.
Police said that Slager used his stun gun on Scott numerous times before using his gun. Slager claimed he felt threatened by Scott and that Scott had tried to take his stun gun, according to police.

(15,242 posts)There is also a smart gun that only allows the designated operator to fire. This weapon really riles up gun nuts but would be a useful tool to eliminate this excuse.

(5,455 posts)The concept of a smart gun sounds great, the problem (as always) is in the details:
It has to be as reliable as current firearms, under ALL conditions that a currently issued police firearm is reliable, and it has to be something resembling cost effective.
Additional questions:
What do you do with guns that can not be retro-fitted with the technology? I have a number of guns made prior to WWII that work just fine and will likely be completely functional long after both of us are dead and buried.
It has to be usable by either hand under all conditions in case of an injury
How to you train a new shooter with a smart gun?

(17,469 posts)something like "Unlawful discharge of a firearm". The victim will be charged with obstructing a policeman's bullets, but will be sentenced to time served in the morgue.

You're right! I knew there was something I didn't like about the statement but it's early and I'm still in that place where I've had my coffee but the caffeine hasn't really kicked in so I missed the finer point you have identified. Thanks!

(38,613 posts)Getting the teabagger vote is hard enough for a black guy. Coming out and condemning a white police officer is frowned upon by those idiots.
