Gallup: Of 5 major world powers, people think most highly of US, and least of Russia

http://www.gallup.com/poll/182795/russia-receives-lowest-approval-world-highest.aspx?utm_source=World&utm_medium=newsfeed&utm_campaign=tiles

This article is based on the findings from Gallup's first-ever report -- Rating World Leaders: What People Worldwide Think of the U.S., China, Russia, the EU and Germany -- on the status of how the world rates the leadership of five of the world's major powers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Russia in 2014 earned the lowest approval ratings globally for the eighth consecutive year and posted the highest disapproval ratings it has received to date. U.S. leadership received the highest approval rating in the world, with the median 45% approval topping ratings of the leadership of the European Union, Germany, Russia and China -- as it has most years since 2009.

Survey Methods

Results are based on face-to-face and telephone interviews with approximately 1,000 adults, aged 15 and older, in each country or area. This report provides annual results of leadership approval of the U.S., Germany, the European Union, China and Russia from 2007 through 2014. Throughout 2014, residents were asked to rate U.S., German and Russian leadership in 135 countries or areas, and residents in 136 countries or areas were asked to rate the EU and China. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error ranged from ± 2.5 percentage points to ± 5.2 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

1. Well that's a no brainer.

The Putinista's are huddled in a corner right now trying to figure out the spin talking points or they are waiting for the official word from Russia (this is probably the more likely scenario).

2. And this is before the overtures to Cuba and Iran. I think our ratings go up another 10% after this

year. The US is actively working to reduce the amount of countries with which we have issues, Russia is increasing the amount of countries with which it has issues.

Not hard to figure out the result of that.

3. I think people realize...

independent of the specific misdeeds of each government and the debate to be had about the relative awfulness/justifications of certain actions, critics of said misdeeds tend to survive and be able to voice themselves a lot longer on average in places like the E.U. and U.S. vs. China and Russia.

4. An interesting and unfortunate point dramatized in the assassination of Nemtsov

Political and Media critics of Putin in Russia simply do not survive and that tends to further reinforce its Pro-Putin and anti-US (or whoever else is the desired antagonist at the moment) viewpoint.

10. Not sure the label fits, if you hate anything and everything "West" does that make you liberal?

In the sense of American politics-

Probably not LOL- They are the same ones who give zero fucks about women's rights in the Middle East because- "religion" and "fault of the West"

19. No, it doesn't. As I have said many times before, it simply makes you a negative nationalist.

Unfortunately, as Orwell described any nationalist, they practice self deception to maintain their viewpoints so reasoning with them will not help, as we have seen here many times.

13. That was not the case in 2008. The US was next to last in that ranking. I wonder why?

14. The change is dramatic. I've mentioned it in debates a few times. GOPers hate hearing it.

And I love that they hate hearing it.

18. The world knows our issues well. People in other countries know more about us than we know about

them, in general.
