Now that every gun-nut & their brother are carrying deadly weapons

Kentucky Sheriffs Deputy Accidentally Shoots His Mother In Church
By DEBORAH MONTESANO * MAY 5, 2015 3:55 PM * Addicting Info
Gun owners dont get any more responsible than law enforcement officers, right? After all, they are experts, having received training in how to handle weapons or so logic would tell us.
Then how is it that a Kentucky sheriffs deputy managed to accidentally shoot his own mother? In church. At a wedding.
McCracken County deputy Cory Golightly escorted his mother to a wedding on May 2. The wedding wasnt in McCracken County. It was at the Bardwell Baptist Church in neighboring Carlisle County.
Nevertheless, Golightly saw fit to carry a gun in his jacket. To the wedding. In church.
Between the ceremony and leaving for the reception, the gun fell out of Golightlys jacket and shot his mother through the abdomen. This was no superficial wound. The woman underwent abdominal surgery at a local hospital, where she is reportedly in stable condition.

And just in case.

Many departments require off duty officers to be armed...

(3,290 posts)be on duty and thus be armed. If I recall, over the years, there have been many instances of off duty officers preventing crimes or apprehending criminals while just shopping etc. being in the right place at the right time to effect stopping a crime.

(18,654 posts)It implies he had a choice. Or should have disobeyed police because he was going to a wedding in a church.

(3,290 posts)dumb or at best negligent. As a LEO he should definitely know better.
Maybe it was a very discreet shotgun wedding and the shotgun would have been too obvious.

Another case that illustrates police firearm proficiency is largely urban myth, reinforced by Hollywood portrayal of police.
Hmm, a pistol wedding? That's when prenuptial hanky-panky is suspected rather than caught in the act?

Or some toddler picks one up.
Maybe a better gun design is needed?
Something along the lines of a button or switch on them that would keep them from firing unless you wanted them to fire?
I bet that would be a simple thing.
Maybe someone could make some money inventing it.

(19,326 posts)Let's brainstorm-up a catchy name for such a "new & improved" feature on firearms.
Hmmm ... thinkety-think ... how about "OFF"? No, that wouldn't work, because
we say "guns go off" to mean it's actually firing bullets .. hmmmm.
Any ideas?

(17,175 posts)Sure, it all starts innocently enough.
But then someone will knock over a cup of coffee, and that person, not having a Nerf gun, will make an IRPD (Improvised Rubberized Projectile Device) out of a rubber band and a folded-up piece of paper, which also misses its target and causes a nasty welt on somebody else's backside, and so on, and so on, and before you know it, everybody will come to work packing flamethrowers and disinvited to the Office Christmas Party.
That's what happened to Wayne LaPierre, and look what it did to HIS mental stability.

(55,981 posts)shoot humans. This gun did exactly what it was designed for. If society really wanted to stop guns from killing humans, they would insist that the barrel be built plugged. Just sayin'.
This deputy was ready to defend the innocent. To do that you need a bullet in the chamber and the safety off and the gun cocked. That makes it so much easier to shoot before thinking. I am surprised he didn't have the gun in his hand at all times.

(39,961 posts)Don't carry a gun every blessed place you go. Problem solved.
There is a place for firearms, hunting and protection in our society; that place isn't every damn where you go. If you feel the need to tote along a firearm everywhere, maybe you are going to the wrong environments.

Local stories about gun crime and "gun porn" threads showing pictures of guns or discussing the merits of various firearms are not permitted under normal circumstances and should be posted in the Gun Control and RKBA Group.
Open discussion of guns is permitted during very high-profile news events which are heavily covered across all newsmedia.
