(34,845 posts)My point is that the GOP in Texas has all the enthusiasm in the world for passing laws about guns but is curiously absent on the very real effects of climate change.

Maybe edit you post?

(28,272 posts)And for the benefit of you and your fellow Texas haters: Wimberley, which received most of the property damage and loss of life, is a boutique community just a short distance from Austin. And Austin, as DU Texas haters never tire of reminding us, is the Only Cool Place In Texas. So how about backing off the shitty remarks a little? Something awful is bound to happen in Dallas or Houston before long, then you'll be back in business.

(19,567 posts)They're still missing, along with 5 other family members. Maybe consider a delete here in light of the missing children? It seems a bit heartless to poke at potentially dead children to make a political point when they weren't even of an age to vote. Not that we know the political leanings of any of the other missing or dead, or that it should matter. It was a tragedy. People died and 100's more lost everything to the floods. My heart breaks for their loss, even if I disagree with some of those effected politically. I don't ever want to imagine what it would be like to lose my children, grandchildren, mother, father, sister, brother, etc. like this. Which is the reality these families are facing today.

(5,073 posts)And 20-something days of rain has brought the state from the red-level drought (extreme?) to the orange level (really bad?). Also it washed away my driveway, but when you're in extreme drought you don't complain about rain.

Amazing that you still haven't had enough water. Hopefully the drought ends slowly.

(9,462 posts)a house floating down the interstate passing cars. Here is a one minute video of it. The Nashville flood didn't make the news because it happened just as the oil spill in the Gulf happened. It really didn't get much coverage overall, but it did pick up when Andersen Cooper flew in and called out the other media for ignoring it. It was a 1,000 year flood with 15-20" of rain falling in just over 24 hours. My neighborhood had about 400 homes and over 200 of them were ruined.

(19,567 posts)8 people in total, three under 10 years of age with one being only 4 years old. I read something about it earlier. Their home was washed away, like those homes depicted in the photos. Simply heartbreaking to read about it, but it's brought home to me what they endured seeing those photos.
Thank you for sharing the link.
I wish the best for everyone involved in these floods.

(19,567 posts)It's not the one I read earlier, but I can't find that one now. It was in Wimberley, TX where they were washed away in the flooding. It appears to have been horrifically bad there. It broke records it was so bad. Hundreds of people lost everything from what I was reading earlier.

The storm rolled through here about 5 a.m. yesterday, but where I'm at (Wharton) only got the edge of it. I imagine that some friends of mine in San Marcos were evacuated since the trailer park where they live floods almost all of the time.

Remember the old sheriff we had here who often tied his shoelaces together? He was the head of the Texas Guard here and his mistress was the Lt. Col. I am not making that up. Just ask anybody.
The Texas Guard is for people too old or too chicken to join the real military. They are for civil help only, like cleaning up after a hurricane. Heres what they get paid. They do not get to carry guns, even if they have one.
