You see politicians are SO USED to giving the same speech over and over that they just go on auto pilot and spew it out and don't even realize what the words are saying....so you see he just blurted out his standard old stump speech and the nasty comments about VP BIden and didn't even know he said them!! Because he just always says the same things over and over without thinking.

Yes, she actually offered that as a very reasonable explanation.

Well, Cruz never actually said "THE" word, "he has a good reputation", and "did not call him anything..." Maybe he "just got caught up in the moment." "It isn't evidence of anything. It's ambiguous, mysterious, hard to know exactly what he was thinking..." Could be it was "a mistake. A correctable mistake."
