Selfie leads Hurlburt crew to ISIS headquarters, air strike

HURLBURT FIELD — Attention, Kim Kardashian. Posting selfies on social media can be dangerous.

Thanks to the alert actions of some intelligence folks stationed at Hurlburt, a selfie posted by an ISIS terrorist in front of one of the group’s headquarters actually proved to be deadly.

Here’s how Gen. Hawk Carlisle, commander of the Air Force’s Air Combat Command, told the story in a speech earlier this week in Arlington, Virginia: “These guys that are working down at Hurlburt, they’re combing through social media. And they see some moron standing at this command ... bragging about the command and control capability for (ISIS).”

According to Capt. A.J. Schrag, a spokesman for the Air Combat Command, the “guys that are working down at Hurlburt” are members of the 361st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, which was established in 2008. The group’s mission is to provide analytical and targeting support to the Air Force.

“They are an amazingly capable and outstanding unit,” Schrag said.

According to Carlisle, the 361st ISR airmen immediately realized that they might be able to identify the location in the background of the selfie.

“So, they do some work, long story short, about 22 hours later ... three JDAMs take the entire building out,” Carlisle said. “It was a post on social media to bombs on target in less than 22 hours. Incredible work when you think about it.”

to hide the real source of their intel. If they were really piggybacking off ISIS social media to acquire targets, they wouldn't say anything about it.
