[Jose Oliva]: “What we found is that a lot of the claims that Walmart has around ethical sourcing are just absolutely unfounded. Many of Walmart’s claims are actually unsubstantiated. And so a lot of what you think you are buying when you go to a Walmart grocery store is actually not what it seems.”

Jose Oliva of the Food Chain Workers Alliance. The alliance represents 300,000 workers in the U.S. food supply system. The group is out with a new report – “Walmart at the Crossroads: the Environmental and Labor Impact of Its Food Supply Chain” – that looks at Walmart’s labor and environmental “codes of ethics” for its suppliers.

[Jose Oliva]: ““We found in our report there were a slew of major problems – everything from gender and racial discrimination, unfair treatment, low pay, violations of workers’ freedom of association all the way to worker fatalities. Immigrant workers, especially, have been locked into factories and forced to work 15-24 hour shifts in essentially what are slavelike conditions.”
