General Discussion

We didn't always see eye to eye on some subjects, but we were able to discuss them in a polite, civil manner, which I greatly admired and appreciated.
I don't know what happened, but if you happen to read this, I wish you well in the future my friend....
Peace,

(28,079 posts)He used a Spoonerism and that made other people think the bad word.
It is a word most of us find offensive but the way some people react to some words here reminds me of the way Ralphie's mother reacted to another bad word in "A Christmas Story".
If someone habitually uses this kind of language they should be banned but that was not the case here.
mindwalker_i
(4,407 posts)That said word was not, actually, muttered doesn't make a difference. Freaking out over a word makes this whole place hard to take seriously. This is what we totally freak out over?

(26,449 posts)In mocking a troll who used the spoonerism.
To be clear, perhaps the mocking wasn't clear, but that was the intent.
Lizzie Poppet
(10,164 posts)The mocking was far from explicit (and completely tone deaf), but to me the intent was clear.

(55,894 posts)to believe that . at least you don't go the "he didn't even say it" route.

(62,325 posts)real reason for this? I saw the reason given, then saw the conversation. I have seen far worse than that here, from people who are still around, which is fine by me, I'd rather debate people than silence them, but it seems there are different standards for different people.

Flying Squirrel
(3,041 posts)One stupid joke out of at least 800 posts per month, and he was also an effective poster against the candidate supported by the admin. First it was "it's their right to openly support whomever they choose" - duh, obviously it's their right. Doesn't make it a wise course of action. Now they've escalated it by banning someone who, after 7 years as a clearly progressive and contributing member, with recent brain surgery, made one stupid joke against Hillary.
Something stinks around here.

(3,041 posts)I have a very high tolerance and put few on ignore, but something tells me you just might make the cut someday. Carry on!
Paka
(2,760 posts)he would be first on my list, but I don't need to push a button to ignore posts. I can do that easily on my own.
However, alerts for any number of random words, even common ones that are not ipso facto insulting, are out-of-control. Simply stating and unpleasant fact about a candidate no longer seems to be allowed.

(10,164 posts)One of the most absurd, clueless bans ever...
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)The Democratic Underground Administrators have a great deal of confidence in our system of citizen jurors and software tools, but we are well aware that trolls are constantly on the lookout for new ways to cause trouble and therefore on rare occasions it may necessary for us to revoke a member's posting privileges for reasons that are not covered by these Terms of Service. Because of this necessity, we retain the right to revoke any member's posting privileges at any time for any reason.
The Admins had every right to ban him.
He has every right to seek out the admins, demonstrate contrition, and request the ban be overturned. My suspicion is, should he do so, he has a good chance of being reinstated. The ball is in his court.
Lizzie Poppet
(10,164 posts)So I'm not sure why you'd bring that up...
In any case, I also suspect Skip would be reinstated if he grovelled sufficiently, too. But it's also my suspicion that he might just tell EarlG to shove a second chance right up his ass after that absurd overreaction.
MohRokTah

(14,912 posts)I hardly ever respond to each person who replies, unless they ask a specific question or something of that nature, because I think after a while the individual responses might start looking insincere as there's only so many ways to say "Thank You", and I don't use it as a way to build up my post count either.
You'd be surprised at the fact that some of the posters with 20,000, 30,000 or more posts got them from a lot of "K&R"s, "+1000"s and/or "LOL"s....
Peace,

(5,704 posts)ban NYC. He is precious to this community. Seems to me that the Admins think they will get an influx of new duers, so the old ones do not matter. This is so sad.
Dear NYC, hope you are keeping well! I will miss you my friend! You reached out to me when I could not communicate on here.

(51,076 posts)a couple three times, if my memory serves me right, from one member who was reinstated each time and is still here writing complete total bullshit about our present President. He's on my ignore list so I don't read his tripe unless someone mentions the name as was the case recently so I know he's still here.

P.S. Might as well add the obligatory "I thought the punishment was harsh. A thirty day timeout for sober self reflection was more in order."
