The only good news about the McKinney pool party is the white kids response to racism
In the story of the Texas pool party, where a police officer was caught on tape manhandling and pointing a gun at young black teenagers, there's a lot to be concerned and outraged about. But there's also one tiny thing to celebrate: the actions of two white kids.
Just 14 and 15 years old, they wasted no time speaking on the record about the racist comments made by adults that they said set off the incident, and recording the discriminatory treatment they said they witnessed.
Sadly, when it comes to public opinion about the event, it's likely that these accounts have more weight coming from the white kids than from the black kids who have offered similar stories, but whom many media consumers might see as potential criminals and untrustworthy reporters of what happened.
Their stories shaped the early media narrative of the event, and their sense of responsibility to memorialize what happened should be seen as an example. Many American adults could learn something from their brave decisions to acknowledge rather than avoid or explain away the injustice they saw, but also to make sure the rest of us understood.

I have noticed this with my kids, our girls either don't see color or don't care because people are people and they are friends are friends. That is why I have hope for the future and if we all keep pushing for it in constructive ways, teaching each other, then maybe one day soon, racism will be dead.

I think that's a good question to ask to help determine whether we are on the right track in this regard.

(60,346 posts)We must gage that by generations and even generations within families. I look back at my parents and even my grandparents then to my kids and see a very positive change. Unfortunately there are still too many perpetuating what their parents handed down to them.

(6,150 posts)That's until I saw children standing with adults who were holding racist signs. There are people who are teaching their children not to be racist... and there are parents who are encouraging their children to BE racist.
What I also see if a lot of white people who say things like "it's not me" as if it exempts them from fighting it. It's not going to end until about 60% of all white people fight against it. And they have to see it when it happens, know how to fight it and have the guts to do so in a hostile environment.
Not everyone has the guts to fight it. Including us older black folk, who are just too tired, and younger black folk who are too disillusioned.

(60,346 posts)Kids, left to their own conclusion will not be racist. Parents and teachers and other adults who interact with the young are responsible for the perpetuation of racism.
Knowing how to fight it is the big thing and violence, in my opinion, will only worsen it.
