It may be a good idea for President Obama to talk to our PM Harper how Canada keeps guns out of the wrong hands. This is just a suggestion from my point of view, I could be wrong. According to the FBI, too many people in the US have access to guns, who should not have access.
Frankly, I do not believe that a 21 year old child should be able to purchase a gun on his/her own.

(2,337 posts)Stop infantilizing racist murderers. 21 is an adult. Period.

(5,704 posts)And I am not minimizing his crime. He did a horrible crime and am trying to understand how a 21-year old could be so racist! Somewhere, he had to have learnt that. Racists are not born, they are inculcated by people they look up to.

(2,337 posts)but every parent feels that way. I'm nearly 30, I make a very comfortable living, left home at 18, and my mother still tries to slip me $20 for gas when I visit, refers to me as her little boy, and often expresses other sentiments that lead me to believe she's forgotten my true age. If that were somehow applied to laws and societal standards though, we'd all be truly fucked. Parents infantalize their kids, no doubt. Let's not expand that particular behavior to adults we don't know, much less mass murdering scum like asshole.

(5,704 posts)What he did was abominable, shattered the lives of 9 people in a community in a church no less along with the survivors. To me, a Church is a sanctuary and he planned to target that Church, which makes it even sadder. Even more sadder is that he sat with the congregation during the bible study for an hour and still had the gall to shoot them. That is so incomprehensible!
Let me explain, am not from North America and we feel responsible for our children even when they are past 18. At 18, they just finished high school and need parents to help them economically through College and University.

(8,747 posts)It is helicoptering parenting to the extreme. A 21 year old is legally a full adult in the US in all respects. You are attempting to shift the blame away from Roof to someone or something else. Hold the shit accountable for actions and quit trying to shift the blame. You will not get anywhere with people in this country by calling a full adult "a child".

(5,704 posts)I do not even feel sorry for the guy as he premediated the attack on the Church members, even though they welcomed him with open arms. It takes someone with out any feelings to sit with people for an hour and then kill them. He is accountable and even though I do not care for the death penalty, he deserves it. However, I want him to live longer and realise the magnitude of his crime.

1) Marry
2) Smoke
3) Buy liquor
4) Serve in the military
Is not a child. You're just embarrassing yourself with this post.

(16,974 posts)what bullsquat, he is fully an adult a and has been for three years. Since you think he is not mature and is just a CHILD, should he have the right to vote or drink? That SOB is responsible for his own actions.

(72,790 posts)I think the whole system needs to be changed, although I am one that does not believe that a ban on guns is the only solution. If someone wants to get a gun, they will find a way, regardless of how many laws are on the books. And even if guns are banned, if someone wants to kill someone, they will find a way, with or without a gun. I know a lot of folks are being killed by gun violence, but there's a lot of folks that own a gun responsibly. I really don't know what the solutions are. It seems like folks that commit these mass killings are intent on killing, and that, to me, is the biggest issue. Guns are certainly the weapon of choice with a high kill rate. If one uses a gun, the chances are high it will strike its intended target. I'm not sold on the idea that if guns are banned, the violence will stop. I think in many cases, those folks intent on killing will just find another weapon to use.
