Published on Aug 23, 2015
"Much like Donald Trump today, at one point Newt Gingrich held the frontrunner position in the 2012 Republican primary election. His campaign plodded on using borrowed money for months after most people realized Gingrich didn't have a chance, and when Newt 2012 finally ended, it crashed in a heap of debt that may never be repaid.
The campaign still owes $4.6 million to dozens of businesses that provided things like transportation, voter canvassing and yard signs. The former speaker of the Houses debts put him in company with fringe weirdo Lyndon LaRouche, a perennial presidential pretender since the 1980s who owes $3.2 million across four campaign accounts.*

I'd try to add it up but I think I'd need a bigger calculator.

(82,849 posts)4. Luckily for Newt
As a member of the club, nobody will bat an eye that he's a deadbeat. Those wealthy people in the club didn't get wealthy by paying for stuff, you know. Newton's one of them, and will be until the day he dies.

From the WSJ, January 7, 2012:
Right now Mr. Romney's taking a beating. He's everyone's target, and in a way that speaks of something beyond the usual campaign ferocity. There's something else going on, a taunting: "If you're so inevitable how come I'm not afraid of you?" Newt Gingrich, angry little attack muffin, called Mr. Romney a liar. A Santorum fund-raising letter this week called Mr. Romney a "bland and boring career politician." A radio ad for Mr. Paul: Nominating Romney is "a recipe for defeat." Newt, in an interview: "He's not truthful."
